yeah I know, it's a 2.3ltr petrol but he's drinking the juice worse than ever. can someone tell me some simple (i'm not a mechanic) things to check to before I send him into the shop.

He's just had a new water pump, head skim and head gasket cost me 1500 quid, can't afford anymore bills.

Any fuel leaks? Black smoke? rough at idle? sounds like the shop that did the head removal may have left some vacuum pipes and electrical connections not attached.the "Bosch Jetronic" fuel system is a pig to set up!!! but once it it right it is good..if your tank to filler hose is damaged you will lose fuel on the bends...how have you determined that it is using a lot of fuel?...Ignition leads from GSF parts>>Part Number M92500 ask for leads for a Mercedes W123 /230e saloon NOT G' wagen. you are in Surrey...I think your nearest branch is Kingston tele 020 8547 3101..filler to tank hose if it is the same diameter at both ends it can be bought from any Hose shop ..if tapered the MB Only..make sure it is petrol grade hose if you buy local....

Re: drinking fuel bad.

great advice thanks.

the fuel use was bad before the recent head work but I will check all the pipes and connections to be sure.

I worked out that it's using too much fuel as I only get about 50 miles out of half a tank. Also a friend who was driving behind me recently said that there was a very strong smell on fuel and lastly whilst I was idling waiting for my wife to come out of a shop some woman walked past and complained at the fumes.

so I think maybe the mixture is wrong plus the pipe damage does not help . The hose is tapered therefore I'll get the MB one, I'll change it myself, have you done one before? any tips,

Fuel consumption may seem bad, but what are you comparing with? My 230GE does about 15-17 mpg on road and about 1 gal/hr off road in low ratio. It seems a lot but is about the same as the Range Rover I used to run, so I don't mind too much - we just have to put up with it and hope that pump prices stay low :D

good point, however it did somewhat better on fuel before therefore I am a little suspect that there is an issue. How many gallons make half a tank?

10 gallons approx'..... a "properly tuned" 230e engine in good condition should give you an average of 18.5 miles per gallon on town and short runs ... and 23mpg at a steady 60 mph. gentle use of the right foot will better that.....

use the Sprit Monitor website and that will work it all out for you. im addicted to it now, but currently am seeing my figures drop with some heavy footed town driving and the sport mode constantly flicked on, shes only a 190 but she goes!

My 280 had the same problem, it was caused by a faulty temperature sensor. Apparently the fuel injectors put more fuel in if it thinks the engine is cold, i presume to help get it started. Its about twice as good now it is fixed, barely did 20 miles for £20 before.

Just for reference, I get around 20mpg mixed driving. Anything less and you should be checking the system for faults - are your spark plugs new?

Re: drinking fuel bad.

if you can smell petrol fumes, have you checked the fuel pump for leaks. this might not be easily seen as the fuel can spray onto insulating pad. had one go on mine, a small hole had rusted through on the pump body, took ages to realise where it was really coming from. try leaving the engine running for 5-10 mins on a hard surface to see if you can see drips, or see if smell gets stronger.
