Hi,

Can anyone tell me what my paint code is for my car as I'm doing a complete respray!

The Vin is: WDB46023227051332

I've looked around on online datacard sites but it says the code is unknown

All I know is it is metallic blue

Hope anyone can help :)

Joe

Re: Paint code help please !

the best way to get paint made up to the right colour is to contact your local MB dealer..give them the Vin Number and they will be able to provide a "touchup stick" for the exact colour code...GBP 8.45 + vat then go to your sprayshop and ask them to get the paint made up from the "touchup stick" sample...BEWARE ==== EU regulations now ban the sale of oil based paints ..only water based is available "over the counter"..G wagon original paint is oil based and water based paint will not adhere to it....the original paint must be rubbed down to a flat/matt surface (not very successful around the seams)and a primer coat added before water based coating can be applied....very time consuming / labour intensive and of course expensive.

.. and water based paint requires you to "flash off" the water.. with solvent that is easy.. it evapourates; with water this means drying the water with lots of warm filtered air or an infra heater for small areas. Warm filtered air means expense and big clean shed.. infra red means expense and small areas at a time.

2 pack is available for painting commercial vehicles and motorbikes and is still used for the lacquar coat... so just have a wee lorry to paint  but be aware 2 pack is really pretty nasty stuff... I ended up buying a second compressor, air fed mask, heaters and building a paint booth.. but if it is just little bits you can do it with rattle cans in the summer (too cold now really).

According to the Glasurit website, the code 5396 corresponds to Mittelblau Met. (Mid-blue metallic).

2 pack paint has finally dried up in metallic anyway .. so back to water based for fresh purchases.. trying to track down someone who still stocks it for "commerical vehicle" painting..

Re: Paint code help please !

Chris,

Thanks for that.. found some down South for £22+vat a litre .. just have to see how it paints. They rang me up to make sure I was OK as I had ordered 4 cheapo throw away paint brushes at the same time (40p each is less than the thinners cost!). Apparently somebody's wife had ordered auto paint + brushes and then hand painted  the whole of an 2007 Micra that had tried to redecorate a gate post. :( Husband was abusive to them for selling the paint + brush  .. so they phoned to check! Always someone's elses fault

This is £22/litre for 2 pack ... note you will need breathing apparatus
.. then you need thinners and hardener (1:1 metallic base coat (no hardener)
...and lacquer if metallic (2:1:1).
.. plus filler primer (3-5:1:1)
.. plus special primer if on plastic (used neat)

Spray wheelarches and pair of bumper corners last Sunday and it looks OK.. still hardening in 0C temperatures..

All in you can be £800 in materials alone if you have no compressor(s), breathing apparatus, suit, spray gun.. but you can resell a lot of it..

Depends how much you want to spray.. I would guess about 4 litres for a windows out respray.. 2.5 litres for a skinny spray on a SWB.. similar amounts of primer (well... I used 5 litres so far..)

So that is 2 pack (for commericals and motor bikes...). You might still get Cellulose from somewhere.. or else it is the brave new world of water based paint... but if it is metallic you still end up using a 2 pack lacquer on top ;)

Re: Paint code help please !

You really want compatible primer to the top coat of paint... you do not want a reaction between the 2 which is what used to happen.. wrinkles everywhere. 2 pack I believe is a little less reactive but given the time involved I would not worry about testing and would buy new. Your old primer could be Cellulose if you have had it a while.. anyway .. I would use "Filler Primer" .. U-pol did a nice 2 pack version .. very easy to sand and it fills all the imperfections after you have sanded it back a bit. Sandy colour for the U-Pol stuff I used. Used to get "spray putty" which was the same thing really .. thick primer to cover the blemishes.

Need "panel Wipe" and "tac" cloths.. and mixing cups.. and wet n dry running from 300 to 2000 .. rubbing blocks (one 1/4 rubber, one 1/8 foam) .. .really recommend a compound sander (Machine mart electric one only takes 5" instead of 6" but they are only about £30 with some discs.. or get a traditional air powered one).

Re: Paint code help please !

You can get reaction from Silicon and old paint. I would wipe down with celluose thinners (better for you than ordinary thinners) or panel wipe if that is what you have. If you really cannot get it to not react then either back to metal (MB put spray putty on .. which is really thick filler primer.. so back to metal needs a few build up coats to make it smooth) or you used to be able to get "barrier" primer which was inert.. but it could be you just doing something wrong generally with spray gun or having silicon around. I was using all sorts under the filler/primer without reactions i.e hammerite, zinc rich primer, Rust Bullet paint.. but everything was clean ..

Not too much help.. but bare metal solves everything (but makes it more rust prone as you remove the MB primer which is a pity).

Gibson,

I recommend you check out Harald's website 4x4abc.com, which lists Mercedes-Benz Gelaendewagen 463 color codes.
