how is this possible?
As you know prop shafts have grease nipples on them, but on the 280 there is a different one on the shaft between the gear box and the transfer box. When i asked a professional ! about this he said no need to grease that shaft because of the nipples. How is this possible? 22 years old and no need to grease them. I remember somewher on this form people changes those sealed nipples with ordinary ones but I really need more info about this whole thing.
shakir gresse them, i always did
Hello Shakir,
I disagree with your professional.
M/benz use a special conical type grease gun to lubricate the nipples employed on these p/shafts. These are not easy to use hence, the dealer do not grease the shafts, it is time consuming at best and when up against bonus or even a tight basic times, they do not bother with greasing. As for the independant garages, they simply do not want the issue to hunt down a supplier of this type of grease gun, besides the cost can not be recouped quickly enough, as it is only M/benz that use this type of nipple gun.
I had over come this issue for my self by simply replacing the M/benz nipples for the conventional types. The nipples at the end of the shafts are of one and the same size, where as the nipples mounted on the slide section of the shaft is slightly larger in diameter.
Remove one of each size and get your local motor factor supply you the nipples. I do not have the sizes at hand - sorry.
Regards
I would presume that MB use these odball "nipples" for the very simple reason that they do not project, ie no chance of stuff catching on a rotating driveshaft.
I think my father had one of these grease guns, it came with the 1968 Fahr combine.
Quite so, it is because they do not protrude, easy for balancing, damage avoidance and basically a tidy design. Typical Germanic trait.

I guess to do that frst need to change them to common grease nipples.which I shall do, but what did you have on your ones PP ?
