So... it has been 3 months since I became a G driver. Here is a question for you all amazing and helpful experienced G owners!

In a scale from 1 to 10, how useful do you think the G is?

I know the question is a bit vague, so I thought about some sub-questions to help.

I. Speed
II. Fun
III. Load volume it can carry
IV. Fuel Consumption
V. Cost of running
VI. The envy/curious eyes of the others
VII. Worrying about your G being damaged

I have carried a full load of stuff, with the back seats folded, 4 times since I have it; I feel so satisfying when i do that because it kind of reaches its original function.

However, I sometimes feel so bad when i am driving on my own... since I know the Lupo 3l could do 100km with 3l of patrol, but I need almost 17l to travel the same distance... great contribution to global warming!

Re: How useful is a G?

we can only comment based on similar vehicles iphong, as I have had many 4x4's, and as there are various engines we can only assume you are comparing yours.

300 engine, underpowered ! 6/10
great fun, but not the most comfortable off road, (restricted axle articulation) 7/10
pretty good load carrying but rear door access is restricted compared to others. 7/10
cost, Mmm long term cost of running, pretty good. 8/10
my 560 got some looks thats for sure, there you have made me remember it, my eyes are welling up. 10/10
give my g some stick over the years. 7/10

I don't currently own a g as I have a nissan patrol now, just wanted a change but my next purchase will either be a std 230 or will wait a little longer for a G500. in the mean time im driving jap, until prices start coming down for 500

Re: How useful is a G?

First what do I have?

A G500 RHD

I. Speed - Not much out there that can beat me at the mo - Fast enough, see other posts

II. Fun - As much fun as one can have with one's clothes on! - Have joined the GLASS - Green Lanes assoc and taken my G 0ff road! (Listen to the thud of other member fainting at the though of a 500 off road! :P  )

III. Load volume it can carry - Total of 15 fully battle prepared Airsofters

IV. Fuel Consumption - Actually for a vehicle with all the aeroDynamics of a brick, weighing in at 2.7 Tonnes and with a V8, 5 ltr engine - surprisingly not that bad - Mrs Spider1v has coaxed 22-23MPG on a journey, me on the other hand - meh! Just popped down to look at the fuel thingy and I have averaged over the last 3,679 miles 16.6MPG

V. Cost of running - Like anything Unique there is always a cost associated

VI. The envy/curious eyes of the others - total!

VII. Worrying about your G being damaged - You do that, you would never take it out. That's what life is always about and that is why one has insurance.

Hope this helps

Hmmm... 170hp for that 300 engine, 64.8hp/metric ton... don't think it's that bad really! However, you are right! that 300's output is no where near as good as many others!!

I was thinking... shall i switch to a late 70's 911? but the only thing pulling me back is that i need to transport a lot of stuff quite often...

Re: How useful is a G?

I. Speed: As quick as I need it to. Didn't buy the G to break speed records.
II. Fun: Loads. On and off the road
III. Load volume it can carry: Not much, being a SWB, unless you top it up to the roof
IV. Fuel Consumption: Pretty good, I'd say. 21.86 mpg in my ownership. doing a lot of offroad. Runs with sunflower oil like a dream so there is a green alternative.
V. Cost of running: Bad in the UK. But this is no fault of the G. I mean: add road tax, insurance and extortionate labour rates of garages who pretend they employ rocket scientists (and charge accordingly) when they do in fact employ genrally bad and lazy mechanics (at best). In Spain, tax is lower, 3rd party insurance is all I can get for such an old car and as far as mechanics, I do most of the stuff nowadays myself.
VI. The envy/curious eyes of the others: depends. Most snobs think is a van on steroids. But best looks come from kids, who generally love it!
VII. Worrying about your G being damaged: Yes, A lot! But I use it anyway!

!

Speed - Hmmm, slow! but you can see loads being up high so great for sightseeing (read that as being nosey)
Fun - when loaded with holiday stuff/ bikes / canoes or just going off roading - GREAT FUN :P
Load - never had a problem fitting it and them all in.
Fuel - not good and a small tank :x
Cost - well mines old so insurance cheap, parts often come from ebay - all things that you love cost money. :P
Envy - not sure about envy, but Dawney and I are know in our area as the G-wagen ladies. and total strangers recognise us and know where we live because of our vehicles outside. 8) and there is a guy who walks by and pats my G as he passes :D
worry about damage - major mechanical yes but bodywork no as there is a bit already :(

Well thats exhausted me, back to bed now - Helen is not well :(

Re: How useful is a G?

I. No such thing as a fast G (AMG/Brabus included) But thats not the point
II. Fun. Can be. But on normal roads / traffic it's not much. Give me a small light, nimble car.
III. Load volume. Strangely I find it pretty useless for this purpose.
IV. Umm
V. Winner. Next to nothing when you take depreciation and the low cost of service parts in to account.
VI. Teenage boys seem to like it. Not sure thats a good thing
VII. Not really.

So who knows what the appeal is :D :D

Go figure I guess but a classic 911 would hold the same appeal. Apart from the fragility

HAHA! I don't know what the appeal is either! I guess it's because they are relatively rare?

To be honest... don't think the ordinary teenage boys even know what Gs are! You know that phrase in life... a lot people tend to stair at rare/attractive/abnormal objects in an impolite way?... luckily I wasn't one of them because my parents would be so so angry with me if they saw me did that!

Thank you very much for the comment!

Yes that could be one element. One of the most accomplished car I’ve had was a Ford Mondeo. Fast, handled like a dream (I’ve never subscribed to the BMW rear wheel drive junk. I prefer to leave the road forwards when it goes wrong. All the opposite lock rubbish coming form egotistical motoring journalists. Comfortable, safe, economical etc etc.
Did I actually enjoy owning it? Not really.

The engineering appeals to the engineer in me.

The fact that I never doubt it will start and get me to where I intend is pretty satisfying. Not saying things don’t break but it’s actually such a basic machine (early 463 diesel, non turbo, non electronic) so I assume I can at least bodge it enough to get me home. Case in point. Clutch slave cylinder failed 20 miles from home. Just started it in gear and drove home without the clutch. Changing down was a little bit of a challenge 8) .

I do think about selling and getting a Ur Quattro though :)

You can read the whole story here: http://www.gwoa.co.uk/index.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=7001&start=0

There wasn't that much damage, but I will still have to take the G for repairs because i cannot get the window glass to wind up completely...

I. Speed
6 and that is with a TD. But hey if it was speed I was after I'd buy a Porsche or a Lotus.

II. Fun
11 for the fact I can take it down a lane and get it all muddy and then still have the concierge at some snooty hotel park it out front.

III. Load volume it can carry
10 for a car - otherwise I would get a van. I do have a photo somewhere.... all seats folded down and packed to the ceiling. The only person who could fit in was the driver.... provided he was no taller than me...

IV. Fuel Consumption
4.... but the fact that it burns veggie is great.

V. Cost of running
i won't tempt fate here but let’s just say :)

VI. The envy/curious eyes of the others
9 the only car I have ever been in to get more attention was chitty chitty bang bang and that had people standing on the road clapping and whistling!

VII. Worrying about your G being damaged
Is a high number worries? If so then 6? Of course I'm worried but it is pretty darn tough as long as it doesn't get wet.... but as long as Mark is infront of me then all is ok.

dunno... but that is probably roughly the price for the cheapest G.

What I do know is that the dealer from where I bought my G had a 911 (not sure on actual model) that was about two years newer than my G and the same price as my G....

You don't understand I think RHD is the best on the world and anyone who does not believe in RHD or own a RHD has made a big error in their lives. The only way to find complete, true happiness is to own a RHD (and live in Bulgaria!)

Speed - pretty darn quick. just ask Max and Hus ;)
Fun - I'm always grinning when i drive it
Load volume it can carry - only a SWB but can't complain
Fuel Consumption - not bad, and runs on veggie* (although i haven't personally tried yet)
Cost of running - very good until something goes wrong (like exhaust or ignition switch breaking!!!!)
The envy/curious eyes of the others - get looks everywhere (curious, admiring and maybe envious). less so now that i've taken the brush guard off.
Worrying about your G being damaged - have nightmares about it all the time!

wouldn't swap it for anything.

Re: How useful is a G?

Before the G broke my driving options were it and a 1997 BMW 328 estate which is quick, handles well, is comfortable, quiet, more efficient than my 230 and relatively spacious. However, unless I was going on a motorway or more than about 50 miles I would always prefer to take the G. If it had another gear I wouldn't have bothered buying the 3 series!

Plus I can't count the amount of times I've tipped the back seats forward, filled it up with rubbish of some kind, taken it to the tip then just swept it out, put the seats back down and - hey presto - ready to pick up the queen (or perhaps my Nan)!!. Useful doesn't cover it.

A classic 911 is built as well, if not better than a G-wagen :) The 2 complement each other extremely well ;) , although the reality is the Porsche is a lot more fun, but mine is 35years old so not really a daily driver ( no galvanzing until 1976 ish )

YES, THE LORD GOD ALMIGHT has made such a cross, WHO WILL chastise PEOPLE who mock me and MY legal actions and Animal and country and disbelieve the cheapness of property! (which I brought 7 years ago and made a KILLING and I thought I would rub it in BECAUSE being a born again CHRISTIAN I have forgotten the rule of humility and taken to GLOATING and mocking ALL your DECSIONS)

Well ive spent the last 5 days reading the bible, and still cant see the bit wear it says "show your boobys" on a forum, or make suggestive comments about nuts and stuff. Or take advantage of a country where the property is cheap, get all the wealthy westerners to purchase them, which in turn raises the property market which in turn makes it even more difficult for the locals to purchase homes which in turn makes the poverty gap even wider. Now looking in the dictionary for the word MORALS !
