I think the BBC one is called Deutschplus... the book is £15, but i am not sure about the CD. I am learning German and the Uni is using it... so it has to be not that bad!

No... definitely not! I went to Bavaria and Berlin earlier this year and many of them spoke little or no English, especially when you go to those area where only very few tourist from English speaking countries...
I'm using the www.michelthomas.com system to learn French and it's definately the easiest I've come across so far.
