Rear door
I have just purchased a 1992 swb 3.00 GES 463. It was raining cats and dogs When I went to see it so could not be as thorough as I normally would have been. I have now discovered that there is rust on the bottom lip/edge of the rear door. Do MB sell a section to repair the rust. Its not too bad at present but needs attending to before it creaps into the door.If no replacement sections are available how can I go about repairing the section or should I just fit a second hand door. Are the rear doors of the 463 the same as the 460? Any advice would be gratefully appreciated. Thanks in anticipation.
Hi Tomo,
Dosen't look to bad from that snap...it is 16 yrs old after all!!.
Post a close up and someone on here will be better placed to advise.
open the door and photo the underside edge of the door from the handle end..is the check strap secure and working? you can repair the door with a good sheet metal repair which involves cutting off the bottom outer skin off all the way along at the first fold.welding in new metal.. grinding off the surplus weld and repainting to match..treating the inside of the door with 2 coats of Black waxoil via the slot that the check strap roller runs in or with the interior door card removed ...cost.... "Done Properly" not filled with putty around GBP 150 to 200 depending if the repairer is blessed with single or dual talents...if the panel person paints then it can be done under one roof ...so to speak........
easy repair in the right hands, as fixwin states.
thats the beauty of those straight body panels, a sinch for a good panel beater.
all G's SUFFER eventually from the rear door rust sypmtoms. make sure to check the rear door rubber seals at the bottom of the door.its one of the causes of water trapping there and creating rust so make sure the guy doing the job removes all the rubber and works into the door properly.
unlike the bloke that repaired my cousins rear door on his G. I WENT STRAIGHT TO IT and he went straight back to the bodyshop
