I've had a quote from longlife to make and fit a new exhaust system "from the downpipe back" for GBP 399 inc VAT for my 230ge. It seems pretty good to me but can someone confirm that a) that is essentially a new exhaust system and b) if that seems like a reasonable price. Has anyone had bad experiences with longlife? I've only seen positive posts so far. Then there's the stainless/original debate but let's not go there!

Re: stainless exhaust

Hi the expensive bit to replace on the 230ge is the front pipe because it has twin pipes from the manifolds to a single with a flex joint ..this is all one piece. if you are buying stainless from the flex back to the outlet under the offside bumper the geometry from the rear box must be very precise due to the proximity of the fuel tank tunnel walls and the pipe ( it will melt a plastic tank in 15 miles if it is shaped or hung wrong)..there is a heat shield for this area and some installers bandage the pipe with loft insulation which may work for a while... original hangers fitted to the underside are there for a purpose not to ignored....best to bring these points to their attention ( on paper) before assigning the task.. or get a 12 months warranty on the work performed......the price quoted should cover this .....

Re: stainless exhaust

I had a stainless systems made up by longlife for both a 300gd and a ge280 and my current car, with the 280 ge the exhaust was shortened and exited before it came to the fuel tank but yours should be a steel tank given yours is a 230ge so you could do either. Might be worth talking to your next nearest longlife as they are a franchise rather than a chain and prices can vary.

Re: stainless exhaust

Thanks for the quick responses guys. It is a steel tank but might it be worth avoiding the proximity issue and have the pipe re-routed anyway? Just in case I need to get the tank replaced at some stage?
