G55 non-supercharged?
Hi guys,
New member here. I'm a bit confused about the G55 designation. Are all G55s supercharged or only G55 kompressors? If the former, how is the G55 separated from the G500, a bigger non-supercharged engine?
When did the G55 become supercharged?
Thanks in advance!
There is a G55 which was an AMG modified G500 and is not supercharged. This was produced from roughly 1999-2004. There is a G55K which was first produced in 2005 and demonstrated in 2004 at the 25th Anniversary. This is still in production and is supercharged.
And the 2009 G500 which has been available since late summer is actually a 5.5 litre and is roughly similar to the G55 but with a 7spd and is not supercharged.
The N/A was offered as a customer's conversion from July 1999 to April 2001. The G55 AMG was based on the contemporary G500 (I believe that these Gs left Graz as G500s and were transported to Affalterbach were they were converted into G55s). It delivered 354 BHP.
Therefore, back then you could have a G55 AMG as a SWB or LWB Station Wagon or a Cabrio.
In 2002 and 2003 the G55 AMG was offered as MY2000 (with the updated interior including automatic climate control and navigation) within the normal G-Class range, and finished in Graz with the rest of the Gs produced, but the engine did not change. The only bodywork available is the LWB SW (unless you bought a standard G500 and sent it to AMG for conversion).
The G55 Kompressor was launched in 2004, first with 475 BHP and as from 2008 with 500 BHP. Again, the only bodywork available is the LWB SW.

Thank you Maxwell and Mortinson, it is clear now.
