I've had a 463 GES for just over a year fine when I first had it but it started to develop a vibration (betwenn 50 and 75) through the steering and chassis, this gradully creeped up over time (approx 1500 miles) and I was going to get it sorted when my business partner had his car stolen so I lent him my G while he was sorting his insurance out.

I tlod him it had avibration and I'd get it sorted when he gave it me back, he's a bit of a mechanical dunce and when he gave it me back 2000 miles later it was barely driveable the vibration had got so bad, it was trying to shake it's self apart!!!

Since then trying to cure this I've done all the job's I was going to get round to;- replaced the front prop, new disc's brakes, rear suspension, king pin and steering damper and overhaulled the diff's. However there is still a slight vibration just like the original one once I get to 60 and back off. The vibration is slight a buzz which is felt as much as heard, it seems to come from under the seat. There is no vibration in the steering and no vibration in either the gear stick (manual) or transfer lever. I replaced the rear prop with a friends but that made no difference.

Any idea's? engine mounts etc, lets start with the cheapest solution first this things costing me a fortune!

Still love it though ;-)

Hi I have just been sorting a similar problem and found a loose flange ( actually wore the splines) on the end of the gearbox tail shaft. only happened on the overrun when the momentum is pushing the transmission..check the shaft crosses and slide tube between the gearbox and the transfer box whilst your in there

Chilipepper,

It is sometimes difficult enough to diagnose problems with the vehicle present let alone remotely, presuming you have done the basics, i.e established the tyres are balanced and not out of true runing, etc... You might want to turn your attention to the centre propshaft; in between the gearbox and transfer box.

Remove one flange, then twist each end of the flanges by hand and check to see that there is full articulation of the u.j.'s and, or cv joint, as fitted to latter W463's. There have been cases where the cv joint on the prop.shaft develops a limited movement hence the vibration.

Engine mounts will only vibrate upon taking up load, not at speed. Check to see if the flanges are a true fit, mateing each others faces squarely.

Transfer box mounts may cause vibration but these need to have excessive play in them to generate the vibration.

Transfer box its self, can be a source of vibration, much difficult to diagnose. You need to get in touch with some who has "Chassis ears" a piece of tool kit that has some six individual pickup sensors attached at various, likely, places of the vehicle and listening to the noise eminating from those points to coincide with the vibration, heard through a head set, whilst on a test run. Each point of pick up can be selected from within the vehicle to each of the sensors attached. I have, had two sets, but also had my complete tool kit stolen four times in my career, I no longer trade a mechnic now.

Good Luck,

Regards,
