steering play?
Can somebody give me an indication of how much play you should experience at the steering wheel (ie movement of steering wheel before front wheels actually react)?
I have been off road today an am ecperiencing about 10mm of movement before any front wheel reaction.
Once I've checked all joints (no mention on last mot about 500 miles ago) - is this an adjustment to powersteering box?
All help and suggestions gratefully recieved.

Hi something like a track rod end / loose drop arm / loose axle attachment bolts must have "let go" as a result of your offroading.... the box would not normally go out of tolerance that quick..there is adjustment ..if you look down at the top of the steering box ...a large nut with a smaller threaded centre with an allan key head...jack the wheels off the ground slacken the big nut and turn the centre very slightly and turn the steering fully left to right each time you make an adjustment.there should be no tightness is the steering wheel when turning full lock to full lock.....
... and after you have adjusted the steering box .. 9 times out of 10 it will start dripping oil. Removing the drop arm afterwards to replace the seal may take 10t puller + BFH and nearly take you with it when it lets go.. in theory you should be able to move the adjustment back and loose the leak..
10mm at steering rim with no power steering should OK but Fixwin knows better than me .. hey he has gone more than 300 yards in the last 2 years :-(
