Insuring a g in Germany
My son is picking up a G in Germany next month and returning to the UK with it. He has shopped around and got quotes to insure it once he is back in England but seems to not be able to insure it whilst it is in Germany.
Is this a common problem ? Any ideas that would give him peace of mind driving while in Europe.

Most insurance companies should be able to insure it while in Germany if you are returning to the UK where it will then be insured as long as you can provide the VIN. Maybe he should try another insurers. I know Adrian Flux will do it.
Although the German transit plates supposedly come with insurance I don't know what it covers.
when you buy from a dealer they give you transit plates so you will be insured for 4 weeks. try sureterm 0800 999 2030. or drive it without insurance, very carefully. the fine will be cheaper than the cost of insuring it.
That is strange - is he checking with Flux's specialist 4x4 unit? He should explain that he is buying it to bring back to the UK.
I manage to get them to insure on the VIN for the very same reason.
Norwich Union insured mine on the vin number for travel back to the UK. You have to ask to speak to someone more senior who can make a decison.
HI you have not said how old your son is......possibly an age / experience element in all the refusals!!. last time we drove one back we got a set of UK temporary iimportation plates and switched the insurance from one of the other vehicles... for five days I believe...... cost GBP 55 including the plates....
National Farmers Union? (NFU)
They seemed to do a fair enough deal...

The temporary plates are issued by the local german council.
I think you get 30, 60 or 90 day plates if memory serves.
You need about half a weekday to do this. If he is buying from a dealer they should arrange all this for him.
What model is he getting?
If he does go with flux then tell him to get a GWOA Membership. They will give a discount if he is.
Egg insured mine on the German transit plate number and VIN.
Don't forget the German transit plate only covers for 3rd party.
Hi as I recall the plates were issued by the National Imports Relief Unit (NIRU) for temporary importation into the UK (max six months) at any time during the six months permanent import formalities can be completed
Nice photo. Love the way you managed to keep the body sharp and blur everything else. I presume you had the camera mounted on another vehicle?
How was it mounted? Hope you will upload this and other pics to your gallery!
He says he tried Adrian Flux - and that they wouldn't have a bar of it. They did quote on insuring it on the VIN for once it's in the UK, but not before.
Seems like a real gap in the market for people doing this - isn't half the fun of getting something from a different country getting it back?
He's tried:
Adrian Flux
Privilege
Direct Line
Elephant
Norwich Union
Autotrader
City
Call Connection
Swinton Specialists
Allen and Allen
High Performance
A-Plan
So far Elephant have been the cheapest and most helpful by a long shot, but still won't cover it on its trip back to the UK.
Are there any Europewide insurers that anyone knows of? Perhaps it's UK-centricness that's the problem for now. That and not knowing what a G is in a lot of cases...
