At long last I have my 87 280 GE A4 through the MOT and on the road I have a few problems though and need help/advice. I only have one key with the small immobilizer bone hanging on it. When driving it cuts out on occasion I have no idea if it was fitted at manufacture so not sure how to get a new key or find problem or have it deactivated. Any thoughts anyone?

The power steering and alternator fan belts are noisy and seem to go slighty loose after adjustment

I have two sun roofs The front one will not close 100% although no leaks from it and the rear one is not working but I have no ides where the motor/relay is

A couple of the window motors do not seem to work either otherwise its all systems go and as I want to run it over to Normandy later in the month I would be much happier if at least the immobilizer was a bit more reliable

Any advice very welcome Cheers gary

the motor for the sunroof is behind the cladding covering the passenger side (left) C pillar, never seen a car with 2 though, can you put pictures on?

I would try and take your car to an alarm company and get them to disconnect it. Presumably there should be a make on it somewhere as it doesn't sound like an OEM immobiliser if it has a dongle.

Would love to see a pic too. Never heard of dual sunroofs.

Re: immobiliser and other bits

Unless your G was a very special order neither sunroof is "factory fitted" can only guess at this distance about the engineering/electrics...some pics would help for both problems...when it cuts out is everything "dead" or does only the engine stop?? are the fan belts new? old belts can creak and stretch..window motors and mechanisms can suffer from water ingress due to the drains in the bottom of the doors being blocked...the door cards have to be removed to access the motors etc... the bottom pocket screws rust in the water and will turn in the grommet...so not an easy project if water is the cause....

Re: immobiliser and other bits

Thanks all for the help to date I will post some sun roof pictures later today When it stops it is just the engine as the oil pressure/alternator lights come on. I have taken the trim of one door so will look for drain holes/plugs. The fan belts are new and were tightened to stop noise but have worked loose again (alternator/power steering) so will have a go again I will look for sun roof motor and see if ther are two so watch this space Overall the "G" is a joy to drive and gets lots of lookers Cheers Gary

Re: immobiliser and other bits

I would look for an ignition or fuel pump fault...immobilizer would probably operate the central locking as well...does the engine start again immediately after it stops or is there a delay?? any clicks before it stops???

Re: immobiliser and other bits

after it stops most times it starts almost immediately but occasionally it takes two to four minutes but that is rare although very embarrising as the last time it was by the exit to a car scrapyard

The immobilizer appears to be a laserline 989 so will do some hunting for info on that

On the ignitions coil, plugs , plug leads rotor arm and distributer cap changed I am now a dab hand on putting on hazard warning lights

I did not hear any clicks when it cut out but I am bit high tone deaf Is there anything I can do on the fuel pump?

I have added a few pictures on sun roofs and immobilizer so awaiting admins approval before they appear on view

Re: immobiliser and other bits

No black smoke and it runs what seems to be quite smoothly perhaps a little lumpy if I was to be picky When I did a compression check I can remember the figure but it was high and all the same Cheers Gary

Re: immobiliser and other bits

Hi check the fuel pump relay for corrosion on the pins ( behind the steering wheel right side panel).fuel filter and accumulator (inside the chassis leg forward of the fuel tank).is the fuel pump noisy ?? what function does the immobilizer have. no ignition... no fuel... or both.does the alarm sound and the the lights flash if you activate the immobilizer. sit in the vehicle and operate the immobilizer... then open the door...what happens. if you try to start the car with the immobilizer active what happens ??

Re: immobiliser and other bits

Ok will check the fuel pump relay first and then locate the fuel filter/accumulator after

I have no info at all on the immobiliser (laserline989 written on unit) except if I turn the key in the unit under the bonnet the flashers start flashing and the car will not start but no alarm though I have sent an email to laserline so hopefully I will get a reply tomorrow

I will try activating it in the car which I must guess is when the central locking is activated and then opening the door

Thanks for all your help on this I will update you as I make progress Cheers gary
