Strange problem :( Help!!!
Hi,
Well i had a problem a few weeks ago where my petrol tank fell off (see my other post in the forum :P) its all been fixed etc but I've got a problem.
My merc starts up fine and revs ok etc but once ive been driving around in it (whether its fast or slow) it starts spluttering when I take my foot of the accelerator the revs drop but then eventually the car starts spluttering and then stalls.
If i put my foot down on the accelerator while its spluttering its got no power but then suddenly kicks in!
Also yesterday i was trying it again and it sounds like something is rattling under the car and also is the fuel pump supposed to be on all the time? As its quite noisey but that maybe because the padding around it go broken!
Many thanks
Joe

Apologies as I am
Unable to help
You may want to check the following;
Sparks
Sparks Leads
Fuel Air Mass Sensor (well I think thats what it is called)
Finally does your car have a KAT? If so this could become expensive - I had similar problems (though I did not lose my fuel tank!) and in the end it turned out to be a combination of the KAT (the honeycombe has broken down and was rattling around the muffler, one of the brackets had corroded through as well as the air mass sensor had broken.
Spider1V - Still has the wife and kids in Pawn to pay for the KAT and Airmass work.....
sounds like air mass sensor but not sure if your G would have one??
your car should be fitted with a k-jetronic system, fuel filters need regular replacement and are often neglected because of where they are, another possibility could be the fuel pump itself, yes they are on all the time but do wear particularly if the fuel filter is not changed often, could also be a problem with the fuel accumulator but I would check the filter and pump first. Finally if its none of the above you may have muck/dirt in your fuel metering head which sort of follows on from the previous as this is where muck and dirt from the tank ends up after its clogged the filter and trashed the pump. Was there much dirt/muck/stuff/rust in the tank when you were putting it back on?
Hi,
Well before the tank came off it was running fine (just sounded like it needed tunning) but when the fuel tank fell off it happened in a very muddy area (a horse muck heap...DON'T ASK!!!) and it was a few mins before we noticed it came off so maybe it sucked some dirt into the filters :(
How would I go about looking at the filter? Could a novice do it or would it be wise to go to a garage?
Many thanks
Joe
If in doubt just change the filters.... they are not that expensive and you don't want any muck to get to our injectors to end up costing much more money.
Could the fuel be contaminated with water? If yes you need to flush the tank and replace with fresh.
Not wanting to be the bringer of bad news but if you have managed to suck rust particles past the filter the metering head will be dead. Lots of £££££££££ (more than the G’s worth) unless you can find a second hand one.
Change the filter and hope for the best. Easy job but I assume it’s been on there for ever so things could be pretty corroded, therefore if you are not sure take it to a garage so that they can get it up on a ramp.
That's some useful extra info.
The symptoms you describe could suggest a WEAK mixture. A weak mixture actually smells strongly and can be confused with an over rich mixture. Here's hoping :)
Fuel filter you can pick up from any motor factor. To find it just follow your nose from the fuel tank. It's on the passenger side chassis member just in front of the rear wheel. The fuel accumulator is in the same area so don't confuse them. Also do it after it has not run for a few hours, otherwise the system will still be pressurised. It will still spray petrol once you have broken the seals though so be prepared.
