Of Mice and Men
:!: An incredible and sudden problem has occurred: rodents have massacred my car's engine room with catastrophic results: all rubber tubings have been decimated. Looms have suffered. Owner has suffered. In one night. This is the first time I encounter the problem with such severity.
What makes the matter curious is that he car is in daily use IN THE CITY and is kept inside a garage during the night.
Any pre-emptive measures against the impertinent creatures you are aware of??
(f.e. is there an ultrasonic or other device which, fitted permanently inside the car, repels attackers)
Not sure of your normal external temperatures in Greece in the autumn, but with us the attraction would be the heat
ie
daily use and in a garage at night
and
Though I have had mice in both my "G"'s engine bays
as evidenced by the droppings
Fingers crossed nowt nibbled as yet
an electrican assure me that mice would not nibble wires ( as in a house, 230V )as there was something in the insulation, apparently not the same for car wires.
Not a lot of help to you Anakreon
Spray all with WD40 or similar??
Sorry to hear of this Anankreon,
Apparently, M/benz did, or still do, an anti-rodant protection kit for the engine bay. It consists of an electified wire loom layed around the engine compartment. This kit is not specifically for the G-Wagen, I have seen it on the parts microfilm ('in them, there days').
I was hoping it might still be available?
Try a dealer with an old, experienced parts member!
I do not know if the kit would be practical to use with modern electrics with bus lines and the like?
Goodluck.
invest in a cat
Commercial rat poisons (pellets) placed in dishes around your parking area..or in the engine bay / interior overnight (keep away from domestic pets)...much tastier than wiring looms etc.... used in car showrooms and like places to eliminate the offenders.....
my clk has rat poison pellets all around it!!
Sorry to hear about your bike and G Wagen, I have had some insulation and rubber bits eaten on my C43 engine luckily nothing important (yet!!) I saw a clever car corral that someone had built around their classic cars, you need at least 12" high smooth aluminium sheets at floor level all round the item to be protected (with some way of removing part of it to drive in and out obviously) The mice/rats cannot climb this stuff and you will be sure your loved bike and car stay pristine.
Have tried poison not a great idea if they die inside your vents!! the ultrasonic things are useless too

Rakesh thank you. I will look into it.
I cannot use pesticides because of my dogs and, to a lesser extent, children. A cat is out of the question: she will probably feel unloved and, if wise enough, depart for safer accomodation.
