leaking atf
howdie, my 1984 GE 280 showings signs of ATF on that big slotted plug on bottom af transmission. It could be coming from higher up as that is the lowest point in that area.there is like a wierd plastic teardrop shaped cover which could also be the suspect source of the leak but forgive me for not knowing what that is or does?perhaps it conceals a seal of some kind??any info or advice would be helpful as i do have access to tools and get quite dirty quite often.
probably lose about 300 ml every 4 weeks.drives and changes well as i keep level topped up.
regards grog.
mine leaks out of slotted nut thing but it sweats oil out of every jiont just about . i have changed oil and filter , but it does work hard pulling 3 tonne plus most of time its in use , it also operates correctly .when under extreme strain it does make sort of noise you get with air in your hearing pipes .i would also like advise on leaking gear box or reasurance that its normal
If the leak is from the slotted screw, I recommend cleaning and laying down a bead of silicone seal around the slotted screw. There is a washer for it, but the problem is obtaining the tool for undoing and latter, tightening the screw. I have, had some people who have fabricated a tool to do the job, but their experience after replacing the seal is still the same.
Most probably, the leak is from higher up, the teardrop shaped plastic cover. This is prone to leaking; the cure is simply replacing the o-ring for it.

I have a part number that could be of use for the o-ring: for a 720.1 gearbox, part number is : 005 997 52 45; for the 722.3 gearbox, part number is: 016 997 34 48. These numbers could have been changed due to constant upgrading from M/benz, the parts departments will let you know.
Regards,
thanks for your help.i`ll try a 50pence piece and some mole grips .
thanks again. grog
