Hi folks . Managed to get truck ready just in time for the Tay Forest Challenge and I was really pleased with its overall performance , great for sliding by trees and the reduced overhangs worked a treat , no problems with cooling from the revised radiator setup . Exhaust had to be feed straight through the rear crossmember as it heat the member up far too much. Took it to the weigh bridge in event ready state ie: tank of fuel , Hi Lift, ground anchor , tools , ropes etc and it registered 1910kg , saving of 200kg despite adding all that tubework . We had winch problems on both days and David managed to put Old Red on its side on a transit road after the section . Well Done to Tony and David for finishing third overall and look forward to catching up with everyone again at the Ae Challenge next weekend . Enjoy the pics

nice job Allan, but was dissappointed with your results of only 2 punches on each day but the Tay is hard on winches so maybe it's time for a change ?

Re: Big Blue - Tay Forest Challenge

Yes , would have liked to have got more punches as well but considering the length of some of the sections we were glad with the result , it was also Davids winch bitches first ever event , normally performs co-driving duties for David in the rally car so this was a completely new thing for him to get to grips with. The second day left us with a really slow winch on the rear of mine and when Davids brushes broke up on the front motor this really slowed us down until we swapped it at lunch . Every year the Tay gets harder and harder and we always finish about middle of the field or better ( lots of people tend to end up with the same points ) so for what are mechanically standard trucks with cheap winches we feel rather chuffed with the results we get. I would like to be able to afford the same winches as the front runners but we will come up with a comprimise for next year . Anyway I too look forward to beating you on the Ae Challenge as well Ian  ( Well if that hasn't cursed my chances I don't know what will :D )

Hi Fred , your wee truck will be getting some attention in the next few weeks my friend. Great to get all the major work completed on mine so I can get on with some other stuff . ( PS Wife wants to know if you are open on Boxing Day ? )

Hi Allan,

Looks great, a trayback G wagen kind of. Would love to see more pic's if you get a chance.

What did you source the fuel tank off of?

Are the Simex 10.50 wide or 11.50?

Next is a pair of 8274 by the sound of things or go Hyd?

Well Done looks like it took some time getting it right.

Regards.

Mike

Re: Big Blue - Tay Forest Challenge

Thanks for that. Fuel tank was from a Mercedes truck that gets converted to a fire tender , this is one of the aux. tanks at rear , they hold 50ltrs so are perfect for these events. Trying to keep front as neat as poss. so I am looking at a hydraulic front winch and keeping the Come - up on the rear . Tyres are 35 x 10.5 x 15 Simexs , again it was keeping the truck aas narrow as I could afford without extensive work . The whole idea was to build something that was a bit lighter and offerd more tree protection and loose a few inches off the front and back without modifying the chassis , all the running gear is completly standard G except for the 60mm lift fitted years ago. On the cards soon is moving the front drag link higher ( high steer conv. ) as this is still a bit prone to catching rocks and tree stumps. For some more pics go to the Flickr website and seach for Tay Forest Challenge 2008 and you can see some of Davids pics from the event. Will put some more build pics up once I find some good ones. Cheers
