On these newer SWB G-wagens (2001, G400 cabrio, in this particular case), there is an option under the vehicle Convenience-Settings on the instrument cluster for Easy Entry.

The options appear to be:

1. OFF
2. Retract steering column
3. Retract Steering column + Move seat

This, I presumed relates to what happens when the front seats are raised for passengers to enter into the back.

However, have tried all three settings, but the result is always the same: Both the seat and the steering column move, when the front seat is raised.

The English (USA) version of the user manual (posted here) wasn't much help as it only references the long-wheel-base version that obviously does not have this feature in full.

Does anyone here know what the three settings actually refer to and how/when they are supposed to operate?

(It's the last remaining thing on the controls that I haven't figured out yet.)

Thanks

My first inclincation is that they are for easy access of the driver into the vehicle (i.e. moving the seat back and steering wheel out of the way, so they can get into the driver's seat only with more ease, without bumping into the steering wheel). That could be one explanation...

Yes, it could be that, but then it doesn't seem to be working.

The only other thing that happens is when any of the two front seats are lifted, the electric seat adjustment moves it as far forward as possible on its rails and straightens the back up to provide more access room to enter the rear. The steering wheel is also retracted as far as possible for the driver's seat.

But this function stays activated regardless of whatever setting is chosen on the instrument cluster, so I was wondering if these options relate to some other front-seat function other than when lifting the seats for rear access?

For example, I think that on the LWB models, the steering column moves out of the way as mentioned by "M2dxb" when the key is removed from the ignition. So maybe the seat should also move backwards in this case??

Yes I think that t may be for driver entry convenience. I am fairly certain that when you lift the seat for rear passenger access it always aims to give the most room possible for entry.

Have you tried it by removing the key to see if it changes?

Just had a look at the manual - it is for ease of entry. Check pages 134-135.

Thanks, the manual pages only mention the steering column, but like you say, it does seem to be for the driver's convenience. From another MB forum, I read that the seat movement option on the ML was deleted from MY 2007, which leaves only the options of the Steering Column or OFF, like in this manual.

So, I guess it's for the driver's convenience, then. But in that case that part doesn't seem to work on this G400, as it doesn't do anything when the key is turned off, key is removed, or driver's door opened. Still, not a big problem.

there were a lot of problems with seat controls on the 2001-2003 G4/500s so this could be the issue.

Yes, it was more to satisfy my curiosity, than anything else. The car is now in Italy and my dad is having fun with it. I'll post some pics later.
