Hello to 300GE owners,

can you share the info about your 300GE engine oil consumption, lets say per 10 000km(how much you add between oil changes)?

My '91 LWB consumes 2-3 litres every 10000.

Re: 300GE oil consumtion

I do about 12000 miles a year, and top up with a litre or more twice a year (roughly). I don't think it's all "consumption", some must be getting out somewhere, but the leak is very slight as it doesn't show on the driveway.

I think the 'thin' synthetic oil I use must contribute...I've heard that mineral or semi-syn oils are better for older engines, but I'm not willing to try it out on mine.

you don't say how many miles/km's your vehicle has done, this can have a bearing on consumption but I don't think the figure you quote is unreasonable, its similar to my vehicle with an engine that has done 135,000 miles

Re: 300GE oil consumtion

Mercedes' own admission on acceptable fuel consumption for the GWagen is 1% of the fuel consumed. Obviously, manufacturers typically state a grossly exagerated oil consumption figure, because this one is valid to consider engine replacements under warranty. But let's just consider this figure for comparison purposes.

Considering a moderate average fuel consumption of 16 litres/100 Km (17.6 mpg IMP) for the M103-powered G300, this means that Mercedes would consider acceptable any oil consumption under 1.6 litres per 1,000 kms or 16 litres each 10,000 kilometres.

This is like six and a half times your current oil consumption.

So, although it might look a tad high, it is perfectly acceptable.

For reference, the brand-new engine fitted to my G (the OM603 diesel) consumes perhaps 1 litre per 10,000, but as I said, it is brand-new and diesel.

Thanks for sharing.
I'm not sure but I think my engine has run something like 200 000km. Valves are serviced.
According to our official MB service it is 0.8l/1000km, thanks to you I know why they are using such figures.

Re: 300GE oil consumtion

M103 engines are known for having moderate oil leaks so it may well happen that not all the oil consumed is burnt. In any event, the consumption you quote sounds to me as perfectly acceptable in a healthy 200 Kkm engine.

Although I also run mine on 0W/40 synthetic, these engines were really designed for heavier weight oils. The M103 is a 1980's design and synthetics were not prevalent at the time. However, some synthetics are available as 15W50 or similar, which might help in UK or hotter climates.

I also found that high-revs and motorway use tends to increase oil consumption a little.

And, it's true, these engines are prone to small oils leaks from a number of places, including the cylinder head, rear main-bearing seal and timing-chain cover.
