bored with my G
As the title, im bored with my G i've been beavering away at it when i get a bit of time but im getting fed up with it! To make matters worse i bought a Little Suzuki SJ a few weeks ago (my forth) for a green lane / off road toy and i do love how small, light weight and minimalist they are. (i recon theres more steel in a G axle than a whole SJ)
so people should i sell the G on Ebay as a project?
or shall i continue building the G?
dont be silly man!
build it or regret it for the rest of your life........
Reminds me of the time that Mark and I were at the start of a lane in Yorkshire trying to find that crazy Frenchman and debating whether it was quicker to just go down the lane or take the long route via the roads.
As we were sitting there some guys came up in a Suzuki and when we asked them how long the lane would take us, they said "easily an hour" vs the 15 mins or so by road.
"Ok sod it," we thought, "Fred can wait! We're going to have some fun!" And we promptly set off down the lane. 15-20 mins latter we were pulling into the parking lot at the other end. I think the Suzuki guys were shocked and how quickly and smoothly the Gs flew down the lane.
Well I do see the appeal if you just want to mess about off road they are real giant killers, and for pennies. I certainly wouldn't go up against one in either of my G's (they are LWB :)
On road they are possibly the scariest thing I've ever driven. I figure the front wheels must be connected to the steering column with bungy cord :D :D
True they have an amazing power to weight ratio but I think wouldn't be comfortable for a long drive or on washboard roads.
That and they roll over very easy.
but I think wouldn't be comfortable for a long drive or on washboard roads.

Easy fix.
Rip out a few of the leaf springs. Result, nice comfy ride and it won't make it any more dangerous than it already was in the handling stakes.
Then sell the leaves for scrap. At present prices you would probably recover your purchase costs :D
As for power to weight. 900cc and about 3Nm on a good day. Wow I didn't think they were that light
get rid of it, if you aint got the time or enthusiasm then sell it. but what will it be worth and very few would want to buy it half done !
Nah, Don't listen to them, sell the bloomin thing!
Its not worth all the blood sweat and no doubt tears you have already spent on it. Let's face it now that all the real hard work is done wouldn't it be real nice to see the new owner pull up beside you in a few months time on a favourite off road track of yours and offer to pull you out of your bit of bother.
At least you could then look on in admiration at what a fine job you did with it before your moment of madness made you sell it.
Regards,
Mike
PS I am in the process of modifying mine in the same way you have and have no notion of selling it--- too much fun!

How far are you down the line with it? Could this be 'midterm blues'?
Against it;
Blood, sweat, tears and toil?
Frustration?
Long time on e-bay?
Sellers remorse?
For it;
A great ride when finished
Something different
Out last the Jap model?
envy from some of the rest of the team
Potentially more on eBay?
What words of encouragement can I/we give? Remember things are always seem miserable when you halfway through.....
I would say persevere as I would look forward to comming down to Devon, to christen it with some beer......
Spider1V - aka Mr. Motivator
also i've never rolled a SJ (been very close to it on several occasions!)
power to weight wise they are so good 900KG and 1297cc/75bhp what a beast!
Beast? Sorry I see many of them 'wobble' when I go past - they try (and usually fail) to keep up! Although one did once, then got out if the slip stream!
Cute car though - we brought one for my baby sister, who is a hair dresser........
Com'on JeepMad - I would really like to come down and see the finnished article!
Spider1V - trying to use humor, but expecting some flak.......
Hi,
Before you sell it any chance of posting a few more pis of it as it looked last time like you were doing a real good job with it.
I'm sure the rest of us will appreciate it even if you have somewhat lost interest for now.
There is another option however, Leave the G where it is. The tin can you said isn't costing you much so drive it 'till it scares the pants off you some day and when you value your life again then go back to the G with rekindled interest.
Regards,
Mike
agree - if it isn't costing you anything then put it sorn and get minimal insurance

power to weight wise they are so good 900KG and 1297cc/75bhp what a beast! but a G weighs how much 2.6-2.8tonnes? needs 200+ to give it the same ooomph
SWB GWagen weights some 2,000 KG so it would need 167 HP to give the same oooomph as the Suzy... so a G300 would exceed that and yet be able to drive on the motorway over 60 mph

Mmm... I think they are 1.3 tonne. I used to have one for about 1/2 year before changing to G. They are 2 very different thing really. I reckon you should keep both!
Oo'! I found that it is so very horrible when driving the sj on the motorway. The wind from lorries and bigger cars make the car quite difficult to control.

still thinking about it i do like the G for on road comforts but for what i will be using it for that is not really a issue,
The enginneering of the G is proper old school german, build it to the highest standard and add up the cost.
The zuk is engineered like a aeroplane nothing is too small every thing is adequate to be reliable for its life.
Landys are typical brit, 80% perfect 20% pants
i've also been toying with putting G axles and transfer box under a suzuki jimny, that would be a tool.
