24-Valve TD engine conversion..? advice please
Hi everyone,
I'm back again with loads of questions... As you know, I've fitted the after-market turbo on my 617 diesel engine. It has made a big difference but it struggles a bit when I'm towing a trailer. I'm a bit worried its just going to go bang!! one day.
Anyway I have gone and bought a W210 estate car with a 24-valve turbo diesel engine in it. Am I right in thinking some 463s have this engine in them? I am thinking about puting this into my 460 and know I'll need to have a new back-plate made, etc. Has anyone done this conversion before or have any advice they can give me? There's alocal chap who converts landrovers/rangerovers etc and its him that'll be doing the actual conversion for me.
Thanks,
Andrew
is that the OM606 900 series 6cyl inline engine? if so in the turbo configuration it will not fit in the RHD G's using the original exhaust manifold and the electronics management needed are not in the 460 G ...the turboed ex SSangyong 2.9 engine will fit with minimal engineering as will the early sprinter engine with no electrics...... sri got my model numbers confused....rated at 136HP 2996cc...will not fit into any RHD G' because of the brake servo location and exhaust manifold interface..... had to crop the fan blades and fit a car servo to be able to bolt on the OM 606 turbo manifold to a RHD 463 with the standard 603 engine which has Bosch CIS fuel injection fitted.......non standard but working.......
i think it will take some major engineering - the supposed reason that MB never offered that G in RHD was that there was no space to reposition the steering elements to the otherside of the engine.
If I was considering such a swap, I would survey one of the 463s with the 300. Like Max or one of the other members owns. You could photograph the important areas and take measurements to components to see what mods you would need to make. Brake boosters and steering shafts are 2 items which a generally fixed in the RHD. You may need to build a custom exhaust manifold to provide clearance. The battery would be repositioned "elsewhere". Electrical items need a bit of thought too. Would you retain the 5speed box from the car ? The engine produces considerably more torque than the transfer box was designed for. People have fitted v8s to the 460 so anything is possible
ya the battery is in the rear wheel arch in mine and there is a lot to fit in even without it! in addition to the engine both the air filter and the electronics take up a lot of room.
This is a rather popular conversion among enthusiasts in Spain. The electronic pump is replaced with one from a OM603, good enough for 200 BHP and good torque too BUT (a big BUT) we're talking about LHD Gs. I don't think a RHD conversion would be feasible, though.
depends on what it came out of!!! RHD G's problem areas are brake servo. turbo to air intake hose. and manifold / turbo clearance (re steering column). .for manual transmission application the flywheel on most OM603 are built for autos so flywheel change is required ----not a DROP IN conversion by any stretch of the imagination......
You could buy all the air intake parts off the g350 and that would sort out the intake.. but you would need to LH wing off a 463 for the grill on the side also. But it would be easier to just put on a small air cleaner directly onto the turbo intake. Considerably easier than the 24v transplant.
Witht he cost of 463s being so cheap I can't imagine that a conversion would ever be financially viable
Hi I forgot about the radiator having to be changed as well......
I've done this conversation. Problem no.1 - temperature is going over 120, only one way to solve it - big radiators with good fans on the back, so you need to cut ... think about it.
Hi, I'm positive its the OM606 engine (I suppose the engine number will tell me?) I also have a friend who is a wizard with electrics and will sort out that side of things
