Has anybody ever had any rust repairs done under warranty? I know that Gs are suppose to be guaranteed rust free for 30 years. I've been doing a bit of research and it appears lots of owners of other Merc models are getting it done....

But wondering how easy it is to get done on a G and an import on top of that.... also appears that it is down to the dealer and some are keen to help and others couldn't care less.

Re: Rust repair

I think Mobilo-life is only valid with a full, dealer service history. .... and it's limited only to rust penetration from the rear of a panel.

The full service schedule should include a detailed inspection of the body-work, designed to highlight and catch any problems early, but I've never known a dealer in the UK do one.

Yes, there have been many rust problems on many models (E-Class, in particular) built c.2000, which have had rust develop in may areas, including around the boot release. I think the introduction of water-based paints (which are more brittle) together with some other cost-cutting measures has had a lot to do with it.

Thanks for the response. I've seen a variety of comments where some dealers claim that you need FMBSH and others saying that if it is a known problem area then they will fix it...

Guess I will just do the rounds.

A 30 year warranty against rust?! The small print probably states this only applies if the car never leaves your heated and dehumidified livingroom, gets checked by an MB-official every half hour and if you wash the car with olive oil every two days :-)

I think on cars such as the previous e-class, there are many well-known problem areas. On a G-wagen, they may be more difficult to identify as there are, of course, not many in this country.

As far as my G is concerned the only problem areas have been on the lower edges of the rear wheel arches, the lower joint-line of the windscreen frame and some small areas around the lower-body/upper-body joint-lines. I think that the latter are welded, sealed with mastic, and then painted. Over time, the paint and mastic in the joints tends to crack, drawing in water and creating rust. But the vehicle is 13 years old and the areas are all very, very minor. In fact I've had more problems with a rusty chassis, especially around the rear suspension mounts, but I've stripped it all down, back to bare-metal and repainted. (The vehicle was formerly an MB UK demo car and I think it was probably run in salt water. There was a lot of mud debris in hard-to see places, which also did not help.)

Re: Rust repair

Thanks - seems like David has had a few repairs sorted on both his G300 and G55. I figure I might as well try. One of my spots is of definite concern.

Re: Rust repair

Yes, I had some rust just under there: that's what I meant by "lower edges of the rear wheel arches".

Still I don't think that the G-wagen is in the same category as some of the other rust-prone mercs of around year 2000. Being such a small volume production-plant, I wouldn't have thought that it would have been worth their while to introduce too many cost-cutting changes to they way the G's are built.

I guess that the new G's are probably painted using water-based paints, but I don't know when that would have been introduced on to the G production line. And anyway, my G is vintage 1996 and still has those common rusty spots.

take a look at the 2rd post:

Re: Rust repair

463s have the entire inside of the body coated in wax so there should be no rust... hence the 30 year warranty.

not too many 1996 RHDs about - what is it? a G300E? LWB?

Hmmm Interesting. When I took mine in they said the G was only covered under a 7 year paint warranty. But the person I spoke to initially thought that it was an import as that was the only other G’s she had seen before.

Interesting... I know that just 6 Gs were oficially imported by MBUK in 1996 but I thought that all of them were G300 LWB... Would you be so kind as to send me a few good pictures of your G for my collection? My e-mail is mortinsonattelefonica.net

Thanks!
