our "run around" is a Subaru Forester - non Turbo. it is the second we have had, has done 90,000 miles in under 5 years and so far two bulbs have blown - nothing else has gone wrong. The great thing about the non turbo is you can really thrash it round the lanes when the conditions are right - and it is a joy to drive - I think the turbo would run out of road. Seats are a little soft for a long run - at least my wife thinks so. Having said that I've driven this overnight to and from Austria so it clearly can do the run - cruises quite happily at 80, fuel economy starts to dive above that

I will certainly have a think about the diesel forester when it is here, although we will run this forester for at least another year i think

cheers Mike

Re: sO, SHOULD i BUY A NEW 4WD??

Marcus,

I had a 3ltr legacy spec b estate (spec b just ment inverted dampers as per STI's) great car, no turbo but about 230BHP, a bit cammy but when in the rev band would fly and sounder like a muted version of my old boxster S. The porker was the best handling car I have ever driven, but if was a tad damp, or raining then the Legacy was 10% faster on the twisty bits.

25,000 miles in 20 months, the only problem was my fault when I hot spotted the disks, they were skimmed under warranty, no problems thereafter. MPG when having fun though was 22 you could get 30 being sensible.

Great car but had to get rid after I found myself regularly getting a bit over enthusiastic on my hour drive home from the station. I decided I needed something slower to preseve my licence and health!

Best thing about the Legacy was it was a great Q car, fast but discrete, the imported japanse spec B leagacy is even better twin low prssure turbo's take to 310BHP and no one knows  :D

Two years old I bet you cant pay more than £13,000, the performance plus family & dog carrying ability, plus the fact you can go un-noticed by plod has to the bargin of the century.

Or if I want be start one of "those" arguments on this site, just go an by a 4-5 year old Range Rover vouge, nice BMW 6 cyl diesel, 23-6mpg' all yours for about 18K thanks in part to the government led deflation of used 4X4 prices with its new retrospective vehicle excise duties and of course our current glut of "cheap" fuel  , now that is a lot of car for the money. Done 20k in mine in the last 18 months, solid as a rock...

Re: sO, SHOULD i BUY A NEW 4WD??

as i said in another post, youll be surprised how insurance works out some time! my 230ge was cheaper than my 206 to insure and even a 463 will be cheaper to insure than my old 190!

also go fully comp with voluntary excess, always comes out cheaper than 3rd party, and instead of putting them as a second driver on your policy, go as a second driver on theirs, it knocks the price down loads and will give them a no claims bonus plus a valid insurance cover if they are the main drivers.

sorry to go off topic, but car insurance is something that really pisses me off so im always trying to find ways to get the price down!

Tom

p.s if they volunteer at a hospital you can register them as a health professional and not a student, knocks even more off, even though im a medical student i still have my old physio job down as my employment!

Re: sO, SHOULD i BUY A NEW 4WD??

Tom,
Thanks I was aware of the fully comp cheaper than third party bit however I had not thought to insure in the childs name and put a clean adult ion as well, I will look into
It bugs me too
How come, regardless of the above, I cannot insure a 10 year old group 12 diesel car ( ie not a performance car ) cheaply for an adolesent THIRD PARTY only.
Ie being responsible for third party claims and stuff the value of ones own motor, if stuffed through a hedge.
If this were so the group 12 should not figgure, just the diesel performance
