Hi All,

Some time ago I saw a G wagen from Scotland on ebay. It sdescription and photo showed a PTO off the gearbox or transfer case or somewhere.

Is it possible to still get one?
Where is the connection and is it on all 460 models only blanked off?
Is there another pump that would do the same job from the same place?

If it was possible and easily done I could consider fitting a hydraulic winch to my off roader.
Any and all/ guidence help much appreciated.

Thanks in anticipation.

Regards,

Mike

Re: 460 PTO ?

yes you can get them, about a £1000 and it bolts on the side , I wentcthis route but unless you are going to use it a lot there's no point, just go for a come-up winch for £ 360. Pro was only for the vg080 trashfer case, it's a nice accessory but don't waste your money if it's not for daily use

Re: 460 PTO ?

Thanks, had bought a cheap and cheerful chinese winch and after a 2 day event it has broken my heart. Its a 12000lb winch that wouldn't pull the socks off a dead man. The auto clutch slipps the minute pressure comes on and thats with a doubble line pull and snatch block. I wasn't that stuck it should have done its job. And the freespool has packed up too.

Mr Perfect are you joining us again over here for the 3 peaks this year?

Mike

Your timing is a bit unfortunate Mike - Twodogs ( away on hols for 2 weeks) is probably worth talking to - he's just sold his G with the pto driven hydraulic pump running a milemarker.

Re: 460 PTO ?

Thanks lads,

Ask and you shall receive!

Pity I missed two dogs. Maybe he took photos of the install. I remember seeing pics on the forum when he had it installed and finished.

I had contacted milemarker and they sent me the list of parts I would need and suggested a site to look at an install on a Landie. There was a lot of precise engineering involved to get it to work any way reliable. They also said they had never done a G wagen so couldn't offer any advise.

Morty, the reason I bought a cheapie was I am relatively new to Challenge events and didn't really know if it was for me so didn't want to invest too heavily on state of the art equipment or anything like it to begin with. Reckoned I could use it at the back if I got bitten by the bug and then put something decent up front.

I had bought 2x warn 8274 that had been gigglepinned off ebay and paid for them, but the seller pulled out and returned the money.

I am beginning to think Mr. Perfect is right stay electric. although if fixwin suggestion worked out it would be an easy in to hydraulics.

Mike

Re: 460 PTO ?

mike, I've been there done it and I was using mile markers years ago before they bought the type r motor. The kit cliff had was purchased from me. Now if you are going to do challenge events and you have time and money then there is little difference if you compare gigglepin with milemarker. I love hydraulics but that's was before gigglepin started making there conversions. It's all about speed if you want to compete, bit reliability is first on the list. It's a learning curve, been doing challenge events now for ten years and it's changed so much.

The come up is tried and tested , but if it's winch challenges your going for it's got to be an 8274 . Not doing three peaks this year mate

Re: 460 PTO ?

Thanks Fred,
I knew it disappeared quickly off fleabay before the auction ran its course.
Haven't seen one before or since.
I believe different transfer boxes for different vehicles means fitting one might not be an altogether easy swap anyway. Diesel/Petrol models and all that.

Fred about to PM you on a different matter, would value your opinion.

Regards,

Mike

PS Getting a full gigglepinned twin motor winch off Jim @ gigglepin 4x4 for reasonable money considering the new prices they charge for upgrades.

Re: 460 PTO ?

Mike, when it comes to the 460 PTO it dont make any difference wether it was a petrol or diesel. The VG080 TB was fitted to all models after 81, I believe. There were two types of PTO, 1 for the VG 080 and one for the earlier TB. The later TB was fitted with oil pump to feed oil around the TB whilst running the PTO.

Re: 460 PTO ?

Hi all,
just reposting from the australian g owners site
i found the following indicator in a drawer tonight...it had been incorrectly ordered years ago when we wanted a new front difflock indicator for the instrument cluster...i was stoked when i found this tonight as id forgotten about it - to me it looks like the proper lens for the PTO lamp to come on when its in use? anyone else actually seen it before? interestingly it wasnt on the heap of rusted bolts (beige G) that the PTO came with.
the first pic (from the parts G that had the PTO on it) shows wherethe lens goes im talking about, the 2nd is the actual lens itself
regards

Re: 460 PTO ?

hey
a cheaper way to mount a hydralic winch is to do it with a mekanik clutch and the pump on the end of it and then drive it with a double belt
We have been using this for 5 years on our 280 for racing our pump deliveres 45 ltr/min and 120 bar so the speed is ok and the pulling power is amazing the winch is a mile marker 9000

Hi Jesper,
thanks for info. could you tell me what these double belts connect to? if you have time for some pics that would be great

Re: 460 PTO ?

having competed in a team on a winch challenge with a 90 on a pto winch, I wouldnt recomend them to anyone that is interested in this type of offroading, I'm sure as you all know as soon as you depress the clutch the pto stops working, in short very difficult to drive assist winch with them as you cant clutch it to stop the vehicle and let the winch catch up.
I'm planning on putting hydraulic winches on the orange tray-back G I have, and they will be driven off a 29cc engine mounted pump, haven't decided yet whether Ill move the rad and drive it straight of the bottom pulley with a small shaft, this would be the best/most reliable way, but I don't know where I can put the rad as to not loose rear vision, another way would be to belt drive it from a toothed belt with a corresponding pulley fitted to the bottom pulley.
I was speaking to john sales at donnington on the weekend and looking at his stud150 hydraulic winch, and he was saying that a lot of guys are using chain driven pumps, as with a belt you need it completely enclosed because the belt will pickup muck etc and give reliability problems.

also on the note of hydraulic winches goodwinch have a new 2speed one coming out in a few months, which looks very nice, not the quality of johns stud150 though, which for a hand made in the UK product is very reasonable price wise.

Re: 460 PTO ?

Hi mick the digger
we have hat no reliability problems with our double v belt no matter how deap the mut has been. wont you have to lubicate our chain to make sure that it dosent breaks or stop working and the mut will stick easier to a lubicate chain but hey you have to do what you think will work best for you

Re: 460 PTO ?

@jesper, Ive never used ether system Im just going on advice from guys running them, so you have more knowledge on it than me,
the issues I was told about belts picking up dirt were toothed belts with the pulleys in theory growing from it as the dirty sticks. something that wouldnt happen with a v belt, but as I'M looking to run a 29cc pump I didn't think a twin v belt would drive this size of pump, what size pump have you used?

on the note of chains picking up more muck as there oiled, I would agree with you, but having said that they would be fairly robust being used in many agricultural applications

I suppose the bottom line with ether system comes down to how well they have been built, you can use the best parts but if its put together to less than exacting standards it will fail, and the person who built it will blame the method that he used to transfer drive to the pump rather than his engineering skills

any chance of some pictures of you set-up for inspiration?

regards mick.

Re: 460 PTO ?

hey mick
you are correct with the toothed belt they dont work it has been used here in denmark and there can be a lot of problem with them when they are put to mut
I can´t rember the presice size on the pump we are using but i can chek tomorow

you are so right with your point on engineering skills thing just seems to work better when they are probably made.

Re: 460 PTO ?

Right just to throw a little spanner into the works so to speak.
Initially when I was enquiring about a pto winch it was because I had read that our European cousins use a single big hyd winch which I understand can be rigged front, top or rear and has more pulling power than an electric one but slower speeds.

It was from this direction my thoughts were heading. I would also appreciate some pics for further inspiration as the G wagen is a heavy beast to pull up some inclines.

Regards,

Mike

PS Mick, Joe has the Zuki body mounted on the G chassis, heaven help us!!

Re: 460 PTO ?

mike, A hydraulic winch can have as much power and speed as an electric one, and in my opinion more reliable.
hydraulics are a bit more difficcult to set up over elec, but they just keep pulling! they dont really slow under load
think hydraulics are slow have a look at this winch, 40ft/pm at 1000rpm or about 100ft/pm at 2500rpm, thats in low gear, in high it will do between 400ft/pm and 600ft/pm, or spool in 125 ft of rope in 13sec's!

some people think hydraulics are unrelible, this just is not true!
look at diggers!! the unrelible part of hydrauilic winches are the people who have fitted the system, runing the pumps at to high a rpm causing them to cavitate, not monuting them right, as most pumps are not ment to have a side load on there shaft as with a belt drive!
letting the system get to hot with because of a tank thats two small or not fitting an cheap oil cooler.
if you want to set up a challenge type system they are no dearer than electic by the time you buy three optimas and fit a second altenator, this in its self being the same as mounting a pump!

I supose the reason why more people are not using hydro is up until recently the only avilible hydraulic winches have been been low geared recovery vehicle type ones, giving everyone the impresion hydro is slow!
this is going to change though when winches like the one above start winning challenges, and as I said already goodwinch have a new hydro one coming out in a couple of months with the same line speed as the one above.

Re: 460 PTO ?

I had twin v belts fitted with a 50lt a minute pump, electromagnetic clutch, and a variable speed valve block. The v belts kept slipping under load and when wet. Thats when I decided to fit the PTO, as a back up !. I could use both at the same time as I had non return valves fitted, so when the belts slipped the PTO would take over. But I could drive assist with the auto box as the PTO can work whilst using first and second gear, drive assist was only used when in the hard tricky stuff. Me and Howard were using Hydraulic in challenge events some 8-10 years ago. But they have come on in leaps and bounds. If your running from the engine it has to be duplex chain, forget belts altogther. If your running a PTO you should go for autobox.

the one above was hand made by Rob Saley. very clever guy, video'd him at and AWDC event, on youtube before they pulled it because of the sound track  He is already winning events, but its not just the winch Mick, its the driver and the reliability of everything on the truck if you want to win. Uprated 8274 with the twin motor is really kicking, we have one on the td5 we compete in, best thing we ever did. Dont get me wrong I would have hydraulics any day, but its down to cost. Its easier for you Mick as your in the trade, diggers and all. now when you gunner sell me that G pick up of yours, either one will do.
