Hello,

Not knowing when this was last changed in mine, I thought it wise to do it now, as it may be related to a low idle (almost dies out on me) that occurs rarely. I have gone through the process of eliminating other possible causes, as the fuel filter and pumps, ignition leads, spark plugs, air filter and distributor rotor & cap are all in good condition.

Surprised a search here didn't reveal much on these sensors, so people might not change them often. The dealer wanted £123 (A009 542 0517), eurocarparts.com will do the Bosch part (0258 003 980) for ~£69 (delivered, cheaper if you pick it up from a branch) so that is what I ordered, and will see if it makes any difference. Maybe it will reduce the appetite for fuel (who am I kidding here  ).

You should also check your crankshaft position sensor (engine-speed). When these get old they can become intermittent, making staring difficult and also give poor idling.

Hiya,

Remove the idle control valve and spray into it some carb cleaner or brake cleaner, let it soak in the solution. By blocking the ends on the valve shake well, drain off and repeat this a few times.

Keep the metering flap clean using this same solvant, finally, if the problem does not cure you will need to clean the carbon off the throttle butterfly in the throttle body, to do this you have to dismantle the metering body to get to the throttle body.

It is not necessary to renew the o2 sensor untill it faulters.

Thanks for the input guys, much appreciated!

It is as if my engine reads the forum, today on the way back from work it just died (felt a lot like fuel or spark had gone), but started again straight after. I have been planning on doing that idle valve this summer...I guess it must go up the list of priorities. The CPS looks like it hasn't been disturbed in ages, so it may well be worth a clean too.

...just as well, they sent the wrong one! Will return it and look at the other suggestions first.
