Hi people.

My brother appeared home with an agri spec U1300 (425) unimog the other day.

Was hoping someone might be able to point me/him in the right direction for decent information etc.

Mainly on the look out for a proper pick-up hitch (not tow ball type) for towing trailers. Does anyone know of any 2nd hand units or know of a manufacturer?

Have seen PICK-UP HITCH HERE, but is alot of money considering he'll probably hardly use it! Perhaps knowing the German term will help...

Cheers
Ross

Alex Price, arthur Ibbet, Frank Atkinson,{Atkinson Voss}.
All are Unimog importers and stockists.

Re: Unimog help....

Now a bit silly coming from someone who has not YET purchased an Unimog, but hey I kicked more than a few tyres
Regardless, I found Alex Price to be the most helpful, Atkinson Voss a bit "snooty" and if I remember correctly Alex was an engineer before a salesman.
Just my tuppenceworth

Well if he is not going to use it too often... we used to use the normal floating 3 point linkage but with a "double" bar between them while on chains. So chains keep linkage from drooping. The flat bar between the two balls of the linkage with "key" flat to stop it rotating. This flat bar then had a similar bar on top with some spacers and bolts through some eyes.. and you could then place the eye of the trailer between the flat bars and pin it where you wanted it. (So offset towing also possible). This arrangement did a few heavy tows (20-25t... up/down hills) and went offroad pretty well.

Then use a bottle jack to do the picking up of the trailer .. not pretty but far more cost effective if you are not really using. (Guess I never did get pickup hitches.. they were a bit new!!! .. and no harvest trailer shuttling (sheep farming))

Note that you can get a rigid towing linkage for "ball" towing as the 3 point linkage always had an alarming amount of sloop in it which tried to swing with anything decent on it.. this rigid linkage tied into the lower most of the solid eyes on the end of the chassis and then was supported by the lower 3 point linkage anchors off the back axle so there was no sideways sway factor (normal linkage has one side way bar back to the inside of the brakes on RHS.).

Where did he get it.. sort of on the shopping list ;-)

Thanks.

Hadn't heard of Arthur Ibbet, so trying in the morning.

Vos make the custom hitches shown above in my post, but not willing to pay that I'm afraid.

Erm... unsure what thats in reference to, why did he buy it or why did I used the term 'appeared home'?!?! :D

Have found both Vos and Price very helpful so far on my search for information. Only parts he's ordered so far have been with South Cave Tractors though.

The Mog already had a fabricated continental style 'draw bar' hitch on it, but he's not keen on it and wants a proper hydraulic pickup hitch.

The Mog was local, with previous owner having it since 1982. Think he mentioned it was originally sold in the Arbroath area but not certain.

He's got me looking up a few obscure parts. Vertical exhaust stack next!!!

Re: Unimog help....

My apologies Possum
Yes it was appeared, not land:
EDIT ( We "land" home with stuff / unexpected purchases here in N Ireland )
However it did sound a little unexpected / unplanned regardless, that was all.

No need to appologise, I just wasn't too certain how to answer your original question as didn't know whether to tell you a long boring story as to why he'd bought it or to tell you why I'd said that. :)

Although I knew he'd asked about buying the Mog in the past, it was rather unexpected as he just arrived back at the family home with it late one night last week, without any prior warning or mentioning he was getting it! Was quite a laugh at the time.
