Hi All,

After my recent breakdown and having to have a complete new gearbox fitted I found out that my auto gearbox didn't have an extended breather fitted!!! and the small amount of water that had entered the gearbox had torn the gearbox apart...

My dealer told me that my model wasn't fitted with gearbox breather and they did a little reserch and thought that breathers weren't fitted to 463's

So all you that were driving and splashing about in the fords recently may want to check your gearboxes for breathers and and if not fitted may want to check for water in the oil.....

Don't worry too much as it only cost about £8000 for a new box with coolers and they have plenty on the shelves

Sad to hear about that transmission, did they keep the old one, would be good for spares on the trail?!

Now all those guys who went on that outing (except the Delica-man) must be a bit

Looked at "breathing" for the 4-speed 722.3 auto, and it shows as part 115 (breather cap):

http://www.detali.ru/cat/oem_mb2.asp?TP=2&F=463227&A=750%2E650750%2E652&...

On the 5-speed 722.6 there is part 65 (ventilation)

http://www.detali.ru/cat/oem_mb2.asp?TP=2&F=463241&A=750%2E653&M=113%2E9...

Not to be confused with...transfer case and axle breathing, which looks high enough as it is inside the engine compartment, around where the battery is (on RHD):

I don't know about 463s but on 460s there are 2 breathers, one from the bell housing and one from the gearbox, not to mention the wading plug in the bell.

There is a breather on mine... item 150. I don't know about yours but I think the earlier G400s share the same transmission. What's your VIN?

I think piggy meant an extended breather pipe. They all have breathers.

Well if we can find the breather, then a pipe can be attached? Or the breather blocked for wading? What I don't get is...if it is only 1 hole, water shouldn't enter unless there is suction, or perhaps unusual movement (just thinking aloud).

Re: 463 Autobox Breathers

Sorry guys I did mean with extended breather pipes..

mine just has a little mushroom brether on top and as soon as the gearbox goes into cold water the air and oil inside contracts causing a vacum effect on the breather..

Thanks for sharing that very valuable bit of information, for people that brave the occasional flood. You'd think places like ORC would sell or advertise such a product, along with the snorkels and winches, strange that this is the first time it is mentioned here.

Thats because all you lot don't offroad your offroad vehicles...LOL and driving over a pavement down the local shops doesn't count..

Anyway.. just because some of you have found pictures of breathers I think if your planning on fording it wouild pay to check if thet are actually fitted and check your oils if you have already been fording..

Is it not a one way valve?

Re: 463 Autobox Breathers

In the W463 manuals there is something described as a Bellhousing breathing line (item # 65), but it doesn't give any clues as to where does it end :?:

Re: 463 Autobox Breathers

My 2001 G400 has all the breather pipes and all the G's I've had before it: 460's and 463's have all had the breather pipes too. In fact, I think that the owner's manual mentions a fording depth of 600mm. Are you sure that on your G400 the breather pipe was not left off or not fitted by accident?

Re: 463 Autobox Breathers

I spoke too soon!

Just checked my dad's G400 and that has the mushroom cap on top of the gearbox.

If that has the capability to let water in, then that's a crazy omission on the part of MB since every other item under the body is equipped with breather pipes ending-up on the top of the engine bulkhead. So why is something proper not fitted on what must be the the most delicate item under there???
:?:

There doesn't seem to be enough clearance either to remove the plastic mushroom to fit the alternative.

In the manual, the quoted maximum depth for crossing water is only 50cm, which is below the top of the gearbox. Pretty poor!

Re: 463 Autobox Breathers

Any tips on where I should be looking for this. I can't see how you can see on top of the gearbox. I have a 280 and a 500.

Thanks.

Re: 463 Autobox Breathers

If the breather pipes are fitted they can be seen just behind the cylinder head from the inlet side of the engine .......
