Restricted exhaust

Hi guys!

I appear to have bashed the exhaust on my 280GE just where it passes under the chassis, such that it looks very restricted. It's at the spot where the pipe is flattened at the top already to clear the chassis and my clumsy off-roading has now folded up the bottom.

First question is - what effect will the increased back-pressure be having on the engine / performance??

Second question - assuming I don't like the answer to the first question - has anyone found a way to re-route the exhaust so that it isn't the lowest part of the vehicle at this point??

All input gratefully received........

Chris

Re: Restricted exhaust

Hi Chris we have removed the entire system from the two manifold flanges and fabricated new pipes to bring the next section into the offside wheel arch (the same as the 463) then run the two pipes into a 21" oval muffler and a single pipe into a second 21" oval muffler with the tail pipe outlet just in front of the offside rear wheel....it tucks it all up within the chassis profile and appears to give better performance. "rpm indicator versus speedo readings"....the harmonics at the outlet are slightly raucous between 30 and 45mph but the noise is all towards the centre of the road so only heard in walled narrow roads and then only when you have the drivers window open...have the same on a petrol LWB 463 ( no Cat required in Ireland up to 1994) the 280ge needs to breathe properly and the original exhaust arrangement is restrictive anyway...cost installed GBP 340....in stainless steel... in NI.......

Re: Restricted exhaust

Thanks for the reply. Price sounds excellent but would cost at least as much again to get to you!! What are the symptoms of too restrictive system?? Down on power and / or reluctant to rev?? Meantime I'm thinking of cutting out the damaged section and putting a 'sacrificial' section in flexi that I can replace when it gets damaged!

Thanks again for help with the manifold by the way.

Re: Restricted exhaust

Hi Chris put "powerflow exhausts" in to your search engine..they have branches all over the country...not many know the G' wagen though so you will have to physically talk them through it.. One of our Irish members put a complete exhaust in stainless on his LWB 463... GBP 425 + vat.....nine months ago......

Peter

Kenilworth ideal. Many thanks for the info. Manifold arrived this AM so I can get them to do the lot.

Re: Restricted exhaust

On the 123 series 280E the exhaust was a twin system from the headers to the tail pipe with the pipes running in parallel. It had a lovely almost V8 sound. So put on a twin system, one into each muffler under the drivers seat

Re: Restricted exhaust

Is it possible to buy the piece from the manifold to the joint where the first exhaust mounts on? If so, how much?

Just noticed this post today and the subject is one I have to attend to soon as well.

Regards,

Mike

Re: Restricted exhaust

Hi Mike available from MB it comes as two pieces.. double at the manifold end terminating as a single pipe for the first box....was GBP 173.58 last time I asked.hence the modification to bring the two manifold extensions into the front wheelwell and run two short oval boxes in tandem under the drivers seat.....ideal for mud plugging as the boxes sit protected by the chassis rail and the sill...you could fit a deflector/plate as total protection at the expense of a hot floor.... unless you introduce a heat shield.....would help keep the mat dry in the footwell !!!

I've routed my exhaust so it is never lower than the chassis but i've got no center box. the whole job took me about 6 hours

Re: Restricted exhaust

Mike,

Any chance of a few photos if I ask real nice?
Mine is a 280 which I've fitted raising blocks to and am wondering should I route between body and chassis mount on the drivers side now that I have raised the body off thr chassis legs by 40mm.

Regards,
Mike
