I always thought that you had to be mad to buy a newer Discovery but looking at these pictures I know I wasn't too far fetched... what on earth is the guy thinking? that he can hold the weight of the car in that position?

I wonder how fast he was going over that dune... looks like he must have been airborne for a good few metres.

Re: Insane Discovery owner

Looks like the airbags have deployed

Which I assume means that when they do get it back on to 4 wheels it's not actually going anywhere under it's own steam.

Wonder what he should dial in to the terrain adaptive twiddly thingy to get himself home? :D :D

When they pull it back on all fours, they're not going to get that rope out any time soon...

Re: Insane Discovery owner

A little aside but did you know that if it had got to to vertical, ie. the point where it's centre of gravity was directly above it's point of contact then it would have carried on going - it's impossible for something to stop at the top

Re: Insane Discovery owner

What I was thinking is that guy is being a bit carefree to be standing in front of it. Wouldn't take much for the weight of the vehicle to make the sand slide out from under the front and then the centre of gravity will be going over vertical...

merely standing on the sand could be enough!
I was wondering if one could dig out 'uphill' and get it to end up on all fours.

I agree that the driver himself hasn't been long off all fours

True - but not sure if I'd be brave enough to do it.... maybe a shovel with a very long handle?

I shows how dangerous sand dunes can be when inexperienced drivers with powerful engines play. Without airbags he would likely be dead.

Re: Insane Discovery owner

Hmmm
Analyse thatre the dead without air bags
Now if he had been airborne and coming down with that angle of inclination and hit "dead on", yes it would be a very sudden stop, however if this were the case I imagine the momentum would have rolled him on over forward
I imagine ( I watch too much Inspector Morse ) that what actually happened was that he was landing at a much shallower angle, but just steep enough to get the nose to dig in, the rear of the vehicle then tried to pass the front, so perhaps not that sudden of a stop at all.
I know air bags can be activated by a relitively slow speed shunt as long as it is "dead on" ie full frontal.

Re: Insane Discovery owner

If they didn't have their belts on, the airbags would not deploy (most European systems work that way, US cars have slightly different standards).

I think those are pillows, not airbags.

At any rate, always wear your seat belts when offroading (unless maybe you're going into water and not sure how deep it is...which isn't advisable in the first place)

I think you maybe correct that they are pillows.

Pillows, food, water bottles, thermos flasks, cameras, laptops, shoes, shovels, books, first aid kits, recovery gear, snatch blocks, tools and anything else that wasn't fastened down

i was involved in a head on collision, total loss on the car.
it was a '97 C-class W202

i was not wearing the seatbelt, but the airbag deployed.
worked very well, saved my life.
one little scrape on my arm from rubbing with the steering wheel and one on my knees rubbing the lower dash (if i remember correctly)

Re: Insane Discovery owner

They were pillows not airbags... eventually they got the discovery going again. But the day after the driver burnt the clutch, electronics of the car discovered it and proceeded to inmobilize the car  So back from Lybia to Avignon on top af a flat truck!

At least he got that right, it was the only thing he could do in the circumstances.

The guy in the jeans and brown jumper is doing a top job of holding it up right though :D :D

Re: Insane Discovery owner

and so i stand corrected; generalisations don't often fare well!
i should say "some" restraint systems only deploy if the belt is used.
did the W202 have a passenger-side bag, and did it fire? was that belt worn? might be a driver-airbag only thing.

the reason US products stand out is that their legislation initially started with the idea that airbags must protect belted AND unbelted drivers, whereas mercedes primarily developed it as a complete system with the seat belt.

Re: Insane Discovery owner

actually i don't think you're wrong - i think airbags normally only deploy if the belts are on (though some i think have people sensors) with the exception of the drivers seat where it assumes someone has got to be there if the vehicle is being driven....

Re: Insane Discovery owner

I like the "high sand dune " comment
a bit like our Lydia when I showed her the Formica samples for her shower cubicle,
puzzled look on her face,
I asks"which one do you prefer"
Lydia replies "but daddy they are all the same"
Me
"No Lydia, look at the other sides of them"
DOH
Absolutly true
and
she had the grace to blush.

PS re air bags I would have thought that it was the United States that had airbags that did not deploy unless the seatbelts were fastened
reason
Those silly people will not wear there seat belts
therefore need bigger air bags
which, oops,
inadvertently cleaned the heads off little old ladies who were sitting too close too the wheel.
Ergo
link to the seatbelt they do not wear
Foolproof !
What?

i can't remember whether or not there was one on the passenger side.
but if there was, it definitely did NOT deploy.
i remember that for sure because i had to search for my glasses which ended up in the passenger side footwell

but it could very well be the 'driver side only' thing
someone HAS to be behind the wheel when the car crashed
some smart german thinking that saved my life :)
