Page 12 in the maintenance booklet describes the oils. I'll write out the numbers as the photo isn't that clear.

The temperatures go from -20 to + 3-, and the viscositiies on the 5 bars go from (in order, left to right):
5W-20 5W30
10W30
20W40 20W50 30*
15W40 15W50
10W40 10W50

*SAE40 oil may be used at ambient temps contiuously above 30C.

Schochu, with the temperatures you have in Indonesia, I would definitely use 10W50.

I think Mobil 1 5W50 would be perfect if you could get it at a decent price (I pay some € 30 for the 4 litre container over here), though it might be a tad too thin for an engine designed 20 years ago...

Re: recommended engine oil for 300GE

thanks for your help guys..

yes, i've been told that some 'older' engine may prefer slightly thicker oil, but have not seen any test documentations that proves it.

mobil1 5w50 may not be the cheapest oil around :)
any experiences with motul or shell or castrol magnatec?

Any current premium brand oil will exceed the specifications laid out my Mercedes 20 years ago so choose whichever one you trust best.

I have used Mobil-1 0W-40 on that engine in the UK for over 10 years and no problems, but, yes a thicker 5W/50 or 10W/50 would be better for warmer climates. (Especially as the Mobil-1 0W/40 is actually closer to an 0W/30, ie at the lower end of the W40 range.)
