viscous fan on 300gel
this fan seems to be not engaging , and under normal city traffic driving temp hits around 100 degrees, non city draving is more like 80 degrees and less.
I was in a heavy traffic and suddenly needle started going up, but as soon as it reached around 100 degrees there was a sudden drop as if fan kicked in.
What is the best way of checking viscous unit, my one is reving free always when I check it, never checked when it was very hot but isn't that too late for the fan to engage ?
:?:
Hi the sudden drop from 100c could indicate a faulty thermostat...the fan should "tighten up" progressively as the temp increases.and be turning at full chat in the 90c / 100c range.....
That sounds like it is working correctly. The fan should engage between 90 -95c and that is what happened. It works by hot air flowing over the viscous coupling so if you are in stationary traffic it would be slightly slower.
Remember, I doubt the temperature gauge is 100% accurate, you should be able to hear when fan is engaged, engine will be a lot more noisy.
You need to feel the resistence by hand. Try turning thr fan by hand when it is hot, it should be locked and be harder to turn than when it is free wheeling.
Shakir, with the engine on and hot, open the bonnet and operate the throttle linkage, reving the engine to 4-5,000 revs. If the viscous coupling is working, the amount of air it would displace will shock anyone, let alone the noise (more likely like an elephant buck at the sight of a group of females in season)
If you don't notice that, then your viscous coupling might be kaputt
Bad news, I think they are about £200! You will probably save some mpg with Pacet, but you have the aggro of fitting it, remember you can always bend the tabs over to lock the fan on in an extreme situation
Don't waste time and money. Buy the aftermarket item for a fraction of the OEM one:

thanks for that, only if he delivers to UK.!
I am sure he will....
One way of checking if your coupling is dead?
If you leave it parked in hot sun? On start up you should be able to hear it for the 1st few hundred yards, or may be as Roly says you can try turning it (with the engine off!)
I got a replacement fan & coupling for my W126 from a breaker. Cost zippo, dead easy to swap, 100% successful. I haven't compared them but I'll bet it's the same bits on the 126 and my G. I'll look if wanted but otherwise just ask your MB dealer to compare part numbers.
I've just fitted a new viscous coupling & even when the engine temp is very warm the fan still spins freely. Should it almost be locked at high engine temps ? ( I am assuming my temp guage is reading correctly )
What do you call high temperature?
I would be very surprized unless you are in South of France temps this summer it would be hot enough to cut in.

Does it let go around 80 degrees ? Because whenever I check it it is free reving
what is the normal temp for this car in heavy traffic?
