Ahhhh! Beautiful colour! :lol:
the only issue with putting the axle on yours is the diff ratio.otherwise the axle should just be a straight swap, and for the difflocks you would have to add the master next to the gearbox area, plus all piping etc.not impossible just a bit laborious!!!!!!!
the easiest answer is that there is a small alloy id plate on the front of thaxle next to the diff, it has the ratio on it, it says i= i think, if one of them has been knocked off then via the vins is the next option.
i dont know if the crown wheels and pinions can be swapped from a non to a locker axle, investigate on the russian epc site to see if the part numbers are the same, especially if you can find someone with a 290gdt that has a front locker to compare the part numbers.
The shade tree mechanic method;
Mark the propshaft and tyre.. and count the number of revolutions of the tyre to propshaft... and that is your ratio.. i.e. 3.77 tyre revs to 1 prop rev is a 3.77:1 diff.
Actually, I think you'll find it is the other way around, i.e. 3.77 turns of the propshaft to one turn of the wheel. And that is only true if both wheels on the axle turn equally. The alternative, assuming this is all being done on a standing vehicle, is to only jack one wheel off the ground (and support vehicle), then with the transfer box in "neutral", you should only get 1.88 (approx) turns of the prop to one full turn of the roadwheel with a 3.77 diff. :wink:
Angelos,
No need for that... if you enter that VIN in the Russian EPC website,
http://www.detali.ru/cat/OEM_MB0.asp?WDB=WDB46033217025532
you will see that the front axle serial number is 730 300 17 022951
The 730 300 was the standard front axle fitted to all W460 300GDs.
It's ratio is 44:9 (4.888:1).
If my memory serves me right, you own a 290 GDT, fitted with a 730 360 front axle, whose ratio is 41:11 (3.7271).
So there is no way that you could simply swap axles. The alternative is to take the axle housing of the 300GD and swap all the internal parts of your axle into it (yours is likely to be in better shape that the 300GD's).
The crown and pinion of the 290GDT with/without diff lock are exactly the same, and the front axle of a W461 is basically the same as that of a W460 so I don't see why the plan above shouldn't work.
Just in case you need it, this is the VIN of a 290GDT with front diff lock: WDB4613362X114782
