Hi anyone with experience of O.A.T indicator malfunction.I have one that is blank and another reading +24c whatever the weather.neither sensor (behind the nearside bumper cap) appears damaged....and I am loath to pull the dash if it is not where the problem is ......

Re: outside air temp reading

yeah I had that when I got my 500, first some of the digits did not show, then it started registering +38 , when there was Ice on the road (just in case there is a SA, that was in degrees Celsius!)

The sad thing is that I did have to get that unit changed – call James Lafferty at G-Wagen and he can give you the name of a bloke who can fix it – I think it cost about the 27/28£ mark and was done in about 35 mins (including part).

Hope this helps

Re: outside air temp reading

Hi all O.A.T. problems solved. not from reading the wiring diagrams/handbooks etc and not by obtaining any practical advice from MB. By removing the steering wheel and sliding the instrument cluster out (which was easy)....tracing wires from the plug at the rear of the indicator with a multimeter "would have cost GBP 100 + at MB"....finally found that the fuse 27 marked as "spare" on the fuses page in the handbook had been used for the O.A.T power circuit. one vehicle had no fuse in the fuse 27 slot..fitted new fuse ..all up and running...second vehicle somebody had been there before me and had installed the plug at the indicator One pin out of sequence..fitted plug correctly ..all up and running.....to make sure the afternoon finished on a good note removed the drivers door card and pocket.lubed the window mechanism.loosened the motor slightly and ...all up and running .....new dizzy cap. rotor arm. and plugs next.... both G's are 1991/2 mnfctr.......

The outside temperature gauge (OTG) was a factory option I wonder why they used the spare fuse? I'll check mine tonight and see where the power comes from. Don't you just hate investigating other peoples bodge jobs especially on electrical.

I was referring to MBUK actually. They installed the remote alarm and central locking in England prior to original sale. What a rough old job. I rewired the whole thing.

That explains a lot. I genuinely thought mine was installed by some dodgy back street garage. But then what can you expect if you only pay £90/hr (at todays rates)

Read a nice quote the other day along the lines of:
"If you think employing a professional is expensive wait until you employ an amateur" :D
