I am thinking of buying a 2003 or 2004 G400 CDI LWB. I had heard a few comments about unreliability but nothing concrete. In Europe they seem to be used quite a bit for off-roading and overlanding.

Does anyone have any have any knowledge or experience of this model. Also, what is a reasonable price to pay?

Many thanks
Richard

Re: G400

I would lean towards a late 2004/2005 and a 2005/6 would be even better. Piggysims on here uses his 2006 G400 off-road extensively and has no problems with it but the early models seem to plagued with electronics issues.

In the UK you can pick one up for less than £30k.

But remember that if you are going to be using it for overlanding then there is a lot more that can go wrong with a G400 vs say a G300. You basically need to bring a laptop with you to work on a G400.

Well I think that it is rather more complicated than that....

Incidentally, Carlos Acosta, the Spanish GWagen guru has a 2003 G400CDI LWB, tuned to 300+ BHP and really technically sorted. I reckon it has better acceleration than a N/A G55 AMG and it really rocks. Carlos says that being gentle on the throttle it does 22 mpg easily!

Thanks for all the advice,

I've finally bought a 300TD LWB 1999 and it's great.

Excellent choice. Many argue that that is the last of the best Gs.

I'm sure you probably noticed in your hunt that 1999/2000 G300 TDs sell for more than 2001/2002 G400/500s and yet cost no where nearly as much new.... clearly supply and demand.
