E51 Bike Rack
Looked up a chassis number and in the list it came up with
E51 Bicycle Rack. Alustyle (double)
Anyone got any picks of one of these, just wondered what it looked like.
Thanks
Joe

In a GWagen, E51 means "Short Range interference suppression".
You can buy a bycicle rack at halfords
so what exactly is "short range interference suppression".... sounds like some sort of radio jamming device....
Mmm, well heres copy paste from the full detail printout,
E40 trailer plug socket, seven-pin
mb-telephone (cellular) with console and card (Ñ 26.06.1997)
E51 bicycle rack, alustyle (double) (Ñ 1978)
short-range interference suppression
G48 five-speed transmission (Ñ 1978)
Maybe the bike rack is what actually provides the radio suppression, forms some sort of RF barrier
Yes,
Some codes can mean something different depending on the model. For instance, E40 in a G means "trailer plug socket, seven-pin" and not "mb-telephone (cellular) with console and card (Ñ 26.06.1997)"
It's just the way it is, I guess

I believe it is a device to reduce/eliminate interference in your radio reception...
Is that why I have bad radio reception then?
The other thing I think that on Gs specific code combinations often mean something other than the obvious specified by the individual codes. At one point there was a website which explained all these codes combinations. But I can't find it anymore.
hi heres a pic of one
IMHO
"E51 bicycle rack, alustyle (double) (Ñ 1978)
short-range interference suppression ",
means that in the earlier models E51 there was a short range interference surpression and on the later models E51 means a bicycle rack.
I don't know on what date or model the change was.
The short range interference surpression means among others that there are a lot (11 on my 280GE)) extra earth connections. I have never seen these on the models without the E51 option.

Wout, was your G not originally ordered by the German BGS (BundesGrenzSchutz)?. If so, it's not surprising that it was fitted with E51, given the radio that the car must have been factory fitted.

IMEHO (in my even humbler opinion  ) that has all logic but applied to the whole Mercedes vehicles range, i.e. it is entirely possible that for some modern Mercedes code E51 means bicycle rack, alustyle (double) but given that the G-Wagen has been produced since 1978 in makes no sense whatsoever that E51 could mean anything else than short-range interference suppression, as your own G proves.
hi heres a pic of one
The bycicle rack has always been an accesory (part number starting with a B) and never an option for G-Wagens. What you show in the picture was never factory fitted (as a factory option, factory-coded) and is indeed an accesory.
Mortinson
Yes , mine was an ex BGS vehicle that was factory fitted with a short wave radio. I have seen several other 460 models that had the short wave radio and all had the E51 option.
I think your right for the second part. A bicycle rack alustyle does not make any sense for a 1979 G.
I have a small book with a lot of option numbers for Mercedes G and I found a number (U40) that has three different meanings
"U40 interior monitoring mirror (Ѡ09.05.1996ÿþ 25.09.1996)
cargo net behind front seats (Ñ 26.09.1996)
seat cover in single-colored imitation leather (mb-tex) "
My 280GE has the imitation leather seat covers (MB tex) but I do not know to what type of car the other two options belong, or why there is no other number for these two other options.
Mayby someone else?

Wout, you have a lovely engine bay, is that a 280 that doesn't leak oil!!
Also great looking earth straps, any particular source?

Are u flirting, "lovely engine bay indeed"
