I am being asked by the great and inexorable powers above (Customs) to advise if my 88 LWB 280 was originally gassed with the newer type of refrigerant (and not Freon).
Does anyone know when Mercedes changed the coolant used in the G Wagen to the latter environmentally friendly coolant type ?

Mercedes are quite ahead of the pack on green issues usually so it is probably the newer R34 gas even in 1988 (my G has a catalytic converter even though they were not a legal requirement in 1991) Hope this helps but have a good look under the bonnet for faded stickers they are usually pretty careful about this so independent garages can carry out repairs...
