Hello people...

Have taken a look at my belt (just one thankfully on my car, no AC, M103.987) and the underside of the ribs have some cracks, so I thought a change is better than getting stranded somewhere with a broken belt.

Any advice on what else needs changing at the same time, or if there are no other symptoms (squeaking noise, play in bearing, etc) then it is just the belt (without the tensioner pulley or small shock absorber).
The part is £25+vat from the dealer...motor factors will do their own brand for £20, not worth the difference.

That is definitely worn out. Check that there is no play in the tensioner pulley arm. Is the belt tracking on it centrally? These wear and is worth replacing if it is noisy or mistracking.

Thanks for the advice, I ordered it today. It tracks centrally as far as I can see. Can the play be checked while under tension, or must it be while free. Generaly I don't get any noises from there.
The part numbers, for future reference:
A009 997 5492 (manual, no AC?)
A008 997 7092 (auto, no AC)
A009 997 1792 (with AC)

It cam be checked either loaded or not. Just use a long handled screw driver and see whether there is any movement in the arm, nothing special. But if it tracking centrally on the tensioner pulley, then it is probably fine. Just watch it over time and when it gets to the edge replace it.
Do the above with the engine OFF

Whilst your are renewing your belt, just do a quick check for play on your water pump pulley. You can do this with the belt on, but need to allow for the tension in the belt to gauge the play.
I think it safer, if you take the tension off initially, to check for your play then there is no doubt. Obviously, if there is water pump play it will need replacement, one would think you would suffer a case of a mysterious water loss in the coolants system, but that need not follow as a rule of thumb, a generally one, yes.
If in doubt, I am sure you call on me.

Thanks for the advice and offer...I might pass by you in the weekend once the part arrives for a "supervised" change, if you have the time. Will be in touch...

Initally I was put off changing my belt as I thought it looked complicated but apart from routing around the crankshaft pulley, dead easy certainly a lot easier to deal with than numerous little belts, just one simple tensioner.

...and the tension, did you set it to the same notch it was on before the change? the manual advises the use of a tension gauge but that might not be necessary..

The tensioner automatically sets the tension on the belt. You just put in the bolt in the same place...easy
