I am rebuilding my front doors after 18 mths

1988 460 swb

So I bought new seals for the outside that are held on by a row of spring clips and everything goes together fine .. but I am left with a S shaped length of rubber with a velvet finish on one surface and inbuilt steel spring in the other trough (as if to grip on a bit of steel). It is perfect door length and was in the door "pile". Originally I thought it went on the inside fitted from below but that steel ledge is not vertically long enough? I know there is a plastic bit that goes on top on the inside that is held on by one screw.

I also have a second section of this velvet faced S rubber trim.. not as long as the doors but close .. only one .. no idea where it goes at the moment!

Any pointers?

.. and for the first time in 18mths.. I have glass ..new windscreen (MB).. and bit of triva .. the side glasses are the same so the etch marking appears on the inside on the passenger's side where you would not expect it!

Hi
The velvet lined strips could be for the edge of the inner door cover that touches the window(the velvet is to wipe the glass clean). Did you remove the U section pane guide, rust could creep in there in time. In my case the sections were as good as gone. Good luck

Re: Door Trim?

Steve,

I think it is as you said.. to wipe the inside of the glass.. but the depth of the steel lip sticking down seems too short to get deep enough into the rubber seal to grip.. see photos .. the lip pointing down on the left is on the inside but it is only 5mm max but the rubber section really wants about a 7mm lip to grip on :?

The trim came off.. there was not much rust on that part on the door so it is not rusted .. but if someone could wind down a window and peer in to see if there is a velvet coated rubber seal on the inside which is applied from underneath (under the hard plastic top trim that sits on top) I would be much obliged.

I remember doing the job, but on a 463, the outside one (which i suspect is the one you are holding) had the following number: 463 752 0465.
Attached are a couple of photos, if they are of any use..

Re: Door Trim?

Thanks for that.

I managed it last night .. it does go on the inside but the rubber grip section needed crimped together to make it work again.. the bits at either end looked good where they had not been gripping steel but investigation with a wee screwdriver showed there was no grip left for most of it .. and I do remember they were hard to get off as you have little access. Need to take the glass and winder mechanism out and once started the end of a shaft of a wee hammer is required to push it fully home from underneath inside the door. When in place it then protrudes about 1mm above the door steel.

The 463 outer is the same as 460 (A460 725 00 51 replaced by A460 725 05 51) .. it is held in place by steel spring clips and has a steel spine to which the rubber T section is bonded. The inner wind wipe seal I am talking about on 460 was A 460 725 00 66 replaced now by A 00 985 82 30 bought by the metre. Anyway 463 uses different parts to 460 on inside.. looks as if the 463 one comes from above with screws going down and then the inner door panel covers that painted part of the door .. while old skool 460 makes do with painted door. Now I look .. I see you can get cup holders for 463 doors .. so it must be a real 21st Century car

Here are the two EPC's... 460 one has 460 part numbers .. likewise 463

Ta again.

Re: Door Trim?

Good to see you've figured it out! I guess the biggest difference is the exposed bits on the inside of the car. The paintjob looks real good by the way :p Show us a bigger photo of the car once it nears completion..

M2dxb

Thanks for the compliment .. DIY in 2 pack with full mask respirator after starting with just face mask canisters    ... nearly ended up redoing the whole respray as I had to redo lacquer .. but that just gives me plenty to polish up (spray then 1000, 2000 wet n dry, 3 types of polish by machine, 3 sealant/glaze/wax .. takes some doing!)

Only got glass in last week.. and last night roughly put the bonnet on.. but looks a bit like this now;

Still needs interior, dash rust touch up, bumpers (rears to trim for numberplate in middle).. and maybe paint the wheelarches.. they are painted as they will stick out.. only the roof and half the front bulkhead missed that!

Re: Door Trim?

Arggh...

For history;
The hard plastic inner trim on the door top must be fitted first (one screw at one end and clips in the other end). This is "T" shaped and the bottom keel of the T sticks down into the door. The rubber seal then grips both this plastic keel and the steel turn down of the door in one go.

To get it in you need to remove glass and winder mechanism (3rd time lucky.. :-) )

Really need to do a Haynes photo job as I rebuild... well for the tricky bits of trim like the J slots on the dash vents and the roof/side trims..

>>>>>>>>>>>

Edit....

4th-5th time lucky.

The rubber actually goes on the bottom of the plastic trim .. so you fit glass into door with only outer rubber trim in place but do not mount, and then put the plastic trim with inner rubber trim on it onto the inner top of the door (lug one end, screw the other).. and then feed the glass into the tracks, feed it up until the top.. hold glass up with masking tape over the top on each side, fit the winding mechanism loosely, then align by running glass up and down, final tighten.. job done! A lot easier than fighting glass past the both rubber trims.. actually one of the easiest windows I have done yet (practice makes perfect).

Re: Door Trim?

Hello Gents,

Was Just wondering... if a Merc dealership was the only place, in finding such replacement seal??

I have the same problem on my 460, But to be honest, am simply hate walking into a Merc part Dealership.

They just tend to look at you in confusion, as they have never heard of a g wagon.

If you dont mind you mentioned to different part numbers above...
Which one would i need for my 460??

At least then, there's no beating round the bush..

Would you know remember how much you paid?? (Probably three figures at these dealerships)

I need mine doing ASAP, since i boldly pulled them off the other month. Most definatly need doing before winter beckons..

Thanks

Re: Door Trim?

See the picture titled "460 door parts" from EPC above:-)

Part 62 is the outside seal and it was A 460 725 00 51 and has been replaced by A 460 725 05 51.

Prices from
http://www.mbparts.ru/
http://dicp.ghb.fh-furtwangen.de/~andreas/parts.php
.. show them to be 10 Euro each side + VAT .. so £30/pair roughly from Dealer who really are not expensive for most parts.. you should try getting parts for a Rising Sun car.. then you will know expense!

a 460 725 05 51
It turned up to be the inner seal, Not the Outer...
No refund cause is had supplied the numbers myself...
WhAt A pIcKle....
I can now confirm, due to trial and error, THAT PART NO_ A 460 725 05 51 is for the inner seal... NOT THE OUTSIDE SEAL...
