Is the 460 dead in the UK ?
Last week on ebay there were about five 460s up for auction hardly any sold :? .
the bulk of questions on the forum seems to be about 463 ?
At the AGM 463s well out numbered 460s :? .
Has the 460 had its day ? ....... ,
Has the price of fuel pushed them off the road ? ,
or are thay becoming classics like Huss and Freds examples been rebuilt to concourse condition ?
things that make you go hmmmmmmmmmmm........ :?

It is quite possibly the price of fuel when you consider the price at which 460s are selling since those who are buying a 460 because they can't afford or justify the costs of a 463... well fuel costs will soon outweigh purchase costs! Which is pretty hard to swallow.
But 463s by their nature will by and large be bought by people who have more disposable income to spend on their G or who are buying it for status - both cases where they will stump up on the extra fuel costs.
However you also need to consider age - a 460 is now at the bare minimum 18 years old and at the worst 29 years old! Time is not so kind on 460s and only somebody with the time and resources to keep a 460 running will do so.
....and since Hus has forsaken the 460 the masses will now too!
I think that times will be hard for the ge280 for 2 main reasons; fuel cost and the rust problem that most have around their rear door and lights. A manual car may fare better. Diesels though dirty, smelly, polluting and slow will be more able to hold their own but in both cars condition will determine price and whether a car sells.
G-wagens are not immune from the general economic climate which as we all know is dire so expect falls in values across the board. This of course has a silver lining making cars cheaper and more accessible.
One final point often made and always worth repeating is that your biggest cost in running any car is depreciation and some of the above mentioned g's that failed to sell must be close to the point of free motoring in terms of this cost at least.
460s are the roots of the G :!:
i think the increase in price of fuel has killed sales personally.
i love my 463 and 460 equally both are wonderful to drive/own in their own way.
lay off maxwell, who said i have for saken......
i think the right G will sell for the right money.
[i recent months, tired and worn G's are selling very well and for very good money :!: ]
i recently met the new owner of that 92' model 460.he has stripped it and
gonna spend a small fortune to thoroughly restore and upgrade it. i wont go into detail and spoil the secret....he is joining the gwoa soon and i am sure you guys will enjoy the letters he has.
tempted to say, werent the prices of 460s previously getting a bit too toppy? almost any bag of old rubbish with no mot or tax and bits falling off it has been going for nigh on 1000 quid. are we just seeing a correction to this overpricing. otherwise there are always 460s that are worth vry good money, ie hus mans 280gel, because its condition was outstanding with almost every goody available on it. however there have been a load of wannabe cars that look for a good few k but you can see, even by looking at pics on ebay, that to get them into the same nick as the ex hus mobile will be an expensive undertaking.
also on ebay stuff comes and goes, prices for the same thing on ebay fluctuates over a period of time.
as far as running costs go i must say that a 460 isnt that hefty a proposition, how many are day to day cars versus weekend toy etc?
I have been looking for a while most on ebay don't seem to reach the reserve but the bids all seem to stop in about the same area.
Maybe they have bottomed out.
Are G's considered a classic? can you insure them as such? this would be a starting point for values as with some cars the ones that achieve classic status become cheaper to run just on that basis.
Oh yes !
Of course one can insure as a classic,
my 1984 is only costing £50 or £60 per annum
Pity about the road fund licence though
Still a cheap reliable backup vehicle

Fantastic!
I knew I had seen Otto somewhere. This is a quote from the article:
Three years ago, the company had the Holtorfs’ vehicle shipped back to Germany for ceremonies to mark the 25th anniversary of the G-Wagen, which has earned an impeccable reputation for capability and reliability in both civilian and military service all over the world.
Taken from two contemporary British magazines...
the last post rests the 460's case.
the 460 is a living legend :!:
how can it be dead.
fantastic thanks for the post.....
cheers Mike
My 460 is not dead but it is alive in Kyrenia mountains and roaring like a lion full of pride and joy and lots of torque and acceleration after the cylinder head refurb. You should see the way it climbs up those fire tracks
with 9 people on board with an angle of almost 40 degrees.. That snorkel set up is doing wonders as well as the electric fans .
He aint Dead yet !!!
nice to hear from you shakir!
are you back brother?
Hi Huss, Next week InsaAllah
Twodogs you are right, but not entirely, my G280 was in UK only few months back because it is having a vacation does not mean you should exclude us from the debate. 460's need more TLC because of age but they have more stamina in interior build quality and interior design and reflect the soul of G wagens much better than 463's . I have them both
and I can compare them, specially off-road a good 460 is an amazing
performer.
You guys are missing the point.
The decline of the 460 has nothing to do with how much you argue the 460 is a "Living legend" or the "true g-wagen" or not.
The facts remain that it is now 18-29 years old thus there are precious few in good condition and the price of petrol and ever increasing repairs is pushing out owners who can just about afford a G in the 460.
Even 463s are coming up for sale more often. There used to be a time when there was never more than about two pages of Gs for sale on Autotrader. Now there are normally 4/5 pages.
Nice one Chris
