Hi,

There is a strong smell of petrol fumes coming from under the car (around about where the Driver and passenger seats are) its enough to give you a headache :P

Is this a serious problem or will it just be a hole in the exhaust box? I have alook at the Exhaust boxes and can't see any holes (But then again im not a pro lol)

Hope you can help :)
Joe

Quite evedent there is a fuel leak somewhere that needs to be located and fixed ASAP.
If the smell lingers by the front seats, driving with the windows closed, I would hazard a guess to say the leak is likely to be at the front end of the vehicle, the engine compartment. Follow, the fuel line back from the engine to check to see for any leaks or wet patches of fuel on the fuel line.
You may need to trace the fuel line runing along the n/side of the chassis frame right the way at the rear of chassis. Check the fuel filter and pumps, fuel tank, if necessary, the fuel sender unit. this accessable from a small removeable cover at the rearfloor area, you will need to lift the rear carpeting.

Hi,

I'm not sure I explained it to well :P

What I ment is you only smell it strong when you are driving and its more a Exhuast type smell that petrol. As soon as the engines turned off the smell pretty much goes away instantly :|

Thanks alot for your help though I will have a clamber around under the merc later!

Have you got the complete exhaust fitted? a poor fitting rear door seal or corroded door skin will allow fumes to be sucked in when travelling if the exhaust outlet is not under the offside rear bumper.... that is the reason it is located in that position....

Hey Thanks for the replies!

The Exhaust its completly fitted although i do not know enough about Exhausts to find out where the (if any) holes are!

The doesnt seem to be a full leak on the pipes plus I left it in Park and just reved the engine (moved backwards and forwards in a small area) and couldn't see any leaks on the floor either. My guess its the exhaust :( How much is it for a standard Exhaust system for it?

Many thanks
Joe

Hi Joe before you spend fortunes on a new exhaust wrap your hand in a towel or thick rag and with the engine running at idle go to the tail pipe under the offside rear bumper and hold you hand over the aperture closing it completely...a leaking system will hiss as the gases build up and if you keep the pipe blocked and the system is not leaking the engine will stall...also listen for fluffing noises under the vehicle which will indicate a leaking exhaust.some times on a 280ge one or both of the exhaust manifolds on the side of the engine can be cracked..this will also let fumes into the cabin....

Yep,

I have a cracked manifold too. Can it be welded successfully? I presume it is a cast piece?

Any hints, the crack is small, can it be welded in place or does it have to be removed?

Mike
