Hi Twodogs,
As to how many were sold, all I can say, between first importation of the G's in '82, or so, to 1991 only some 4000 - 460 & 463 were sold. The 463 were just begining to come in. you can allow what ever you like for those small quantities of around 200 or so.
Glory years would be more like '88/'89 respectively speaking.
And to quess as to where they were most sold, I would say only, up North of the Country and from farming communities as there were supposed to be an agricultural import with quite a few tax advantages to farmers as farm equipment, as the rule was exploited largely, I believe in Ireland.
Fiqures are hearsay and not from any surveys.

E S Hartley Mercedes Benz of Clapham (North Yorks) used to sell lots - I think they had the first unimog franchise too. I photographed what I seem to remember was the first right hand drive G but can't remember when - 1983?

My 89 is in basic farmer spec and came from Thirsk ( then lived off Sloane Square)

Regards,

Rakesh is right... 4,000 to 1991 (basically W460s) and then 2,000 W463 to the end of official imports in 1996. That's some 6,000 Gs sold in the UK altogether.

Caversham's figures are marginal in comparison... my guess is some 30 ints per annum from 1998 to 2002? Rakesh, do you have a better guestimate?

From what I remember, that is a gross exageration, in terms of New units sold, Caversham Garage as it originated from, did not sell any New units in either 460 or 463's. It dealt with the pre-owned wagens' originally.
The New units it sold as a bonefide (for a brief period of Licence) importer was when the G500 came out, I would say between 15 to 150 units may have been supplied, (There has been mention of up to 500 units being supplied but I am a bit specticle of that claim, personally, speaking).
Even, after the Licence was resinded, it enjoyed the pevilage to continue to supply New G500's as it did.

i believe its a bit of a grey area but i reckon the first uk import is at 1980 or earlier, coz ive got a uk supplied 230g lwb, first owner was a merc dealers as a demo for its first two years.whether this was before official imports i dont know, but i reckon it counts coz it was a dealers car.

Nice one Mark
What nick is it in?
Stick a good diesel in it and we're motoring.

Re: How many 460s were sold in the UK ?

what nick is it in? ah well thats the 64000 dollar question.
i first owned the vehicle years ago, and stupidly sold it in perfect nick! i then saw it on ebay a couple of years ago on ebay and bought it back. suffice it to say that the condition has now gone down hill in a big way. my intention is to restore it as a concours car since its such an early oddball, ie twin rear doors, 230g rhd and lwb.i am listed as the 3rd and 11th owner.
it will be a few months before i start on it, but i hope to finish it by the end of the year.

That's right, 'cause production of RHD Gs only started in 1980.

What a shame Mark 'cause I reckon that yours can easily be the oldest production RHD GWagen....

Well I guess that you'll have the usual fun restoring it anyway....

I suppose it makes sence that the first 460 was a 280GE as it was the V8 eater of the day .
Is the 240GD Chris owns the oldest non UK 460 in the country ?
