New Stereo System questions :)
Hi,
I want to install a new stereo system in my G but I would like to know a few things :) (My G is a 280ge)
Where is the amp kept? could I use the power connection that is running my old amp to run my new amp? Any other advice etc?
Many thanks
Joe
Hi Joe
I dont think there would have been an amp in the 460,s
just what ever that was in the head unit
i advise getting someone in to do it, its a hard job to get done with a 460, i had a good stereo and extra two speakers fitted to my 460 when i had it, and the poor guy fitting it was REALLY sweating over it and he is very good(had him over yday putting a head unit in my 190). the problem is that the dash is so shallow so its awkward to get a modern unit in. he added two speakers where the ash trays were in the rear ( mine was a swb). as for amps, just have a look around the car, it depends if your lwb or swb, if you tell me ill have a think for you.

ok, head unit is the cd player. as the guy said to me, its like wiring a fighter jet to a traction engine, its really not easy, thats why id recommend getting someone proper in as otherwise it will never work properly and you wont be happy with it. its worth the out lay believe me!
in mine i had an alpine head unit with the connector for the ipod that fed into the glovebox and i could play it clear through the stereo.
i had the front speakers in the foot well replaced with ones of the same size and two slightly larger ones in the back where the ash trays once were, the point of placing them there was that is was a stable place to have them out of the way and the holes were partially there already. it turns out theres lots of metal work through our g's which makes placement a bit tough!
the sound was good but if you want subs lets have a think!
depending on how often you fold away the seats, you could fold have it bolted under the rear seat, theres a good be of space there, you can access it easily by lifting the seat and its well hidden from tea leaves. as for the subs, a lot of the ones in america have them placed over the rear wheel arch in a shaped to fit custom box, this way they are quite out of the way from damage and give a good sound. otherwise its on a box on the floor or under the seat, but my brother had that in his old van and it made your bowels feel a bit loose!
heres some pics, no doubt ill re read this and edit it!

heres the head unit...
replaced speakers in the footwell...
and the rear ones where the ash trays once were...
hope its a help!
are we talking lwb or swb?
swb
i had a pair in the footwell already, thats how they came standard i think. they are quite tucked up in there but its out of the way from damaging them.
the depth of the speakers can often cause problems, its another thing that limits where you can put them.
Offical rear position is up at the top either side of the rear door .. mine certainly has the perforations there (plus standard ones up front in the footwell as shown).
No wiring seems in place for the rears so it is a wire it from scratch job but the interior is so well screwed down that this can be a slow job.
Dash area for head unit seems really too short to get a unit in there.. the Blaupunt that came with the car did sort of fit if you really jammed it in after carefully packing the cables to one side..
There would be room in dash around glovebox area for an amp.. take glovebox out and have a look around. Otherwise you have to run lots of cables and there really is not too much in the way of decent hiding holes behind panels so you end up compromising the load area and hiding it under the rear seat.
Power feed can come from the fusebox over the driver's side .. or if you are going for power hungry then the battery is the other side of the bulkhead from the bulkhead and there are 2 grommets that connect.. one would be above the bonnet pull cable .. the other is less useful as it is at the back of the battery tray and a full size battery would cover it .. but most of us run wee more normal batteries rather than half a tank battery  so it would be visible (the other one will be tucked up behind the inner wing).
Please have in mind that rear speakers fitted either side of the rear door (which is where they are supposed to go) or on the sides of the rear seat, will allow sound to be heard from the outside, as the speakers are very close to the sheet metal and there is no insulation in-between. The speakers are attached with clips and screws on the interior trim covers. Use strong clips as the weight of the speakers and off-roading may break them and they will simply stick to the sheet metal due to the speaker magnets.
On the sides of the front footwells, you'll find a recess cut-out on the sheet metal for speaker installation.
Also I had no problem fitting a modern head unit to my 460 G as there is enough depth in the central console to do so. If you have a problem, then it might be too much wiring behind the head unit which would need you to sort it out with your fingers through the ashtray opening (remove the ashtray and its slider) as you push the head unit in.
If you want to use an amplifier, consider my first point above as you'll be sharing your music with pedestrtians.
the perforations in the rear pillar trims arent for speakers they are for air to leave the vehicle via the rear vents. if you use these for speakers try not to block all of these with the speaker coz it wont help the heating/venting system much.
the rear area is also very shallow for fitting speakers, ive see them there before but only with suspicious DIY mounting and it looked quite messy. also they are very visible there, so if you arent happy with the finish it will be in your visibility every time your in the g!
depends on how good of a job you can make of it!
ah damn that sucks. If thats the case where could I take a power source from for my new amp. I'm not to sure how to connect to the battery etc so please go slow :P
many thanks
Joe
