hi all

the engine swap from a w124 into my 230 ges. have put in a duplex-chained 230te engine, needed to use all orig g wagen ignition system induction/exhaust system etc.

it starts, runs and drives, but sputters under load, feels like a HT fault to me. as i hadthe parts anyway, its had a new dizzy cap, rotor arm, leads...

i also tried it with the fuel metering head off the 230te, interestingly it hardly wanted to run..., wouldnt tick over and kept stalling.

timng set statically them dynamically at 8 deg btdc vacuum applied

a good trick i learnt is check it out in the dark, in my case there is a clear sign of arcing down in the plug receses fron the leads to the head - but i have no idea if that is the cause of it not running well, but equally i have never seen thos before so dont know how/why it happens, or how to solve it......

the only other things of note are that i have no idea theat the inductio gear is good as it never ran for me, same goes for the coil, the dizzy i think was a spare one from a member (cheers chris). the reason the engine was swapped was cos the auxiliary (dizzy drive) shaft was cog-less (and therefore nice bits of metal had to be somewhere inside......)

anyone got any bright ideas? cheers

Re: spluttering

Hi John arcing would be a good start..every spark that goes to earth via the surrounding metal weakens or does not get to the plug...hence the miss under load.try a good set of leads before anything else.....

Re: spluttering

theyre brand new drivemaster ones, but the original ones react in the same way ....quite a coincidence? same with the differing combinations of rotor arm/dizzy cap etc.....

Re: spluttering

How about your engine to body bonding (earthing straps) should be at least three between the engine and the body.....

Re: spluttering

If it stutters under load it could be fuel starvation, check the fuel pump earth, in tank filter, fuel line filter into the metering head. If it smells of unburnt fuel then temp sensor or cold start injector.

Random thoughts after a bottle of wine.............

But it really shouldn't be arcing like that - WD 40 to start with.
