my mercedes diesel swap
Hi everyone,
I would like to indroduce myself - My name is Paul, I am from Czech Republic and have Jeep Cherokee XJ, 2 door version...
A little history - Cherokees are made as 2,5 liter and 4.0 liter petrol and 2,1 and 2,5 turbo diesels. I wanted diesel.
The jeep was in perfect body condition, but only problem was engine. It really do not have power enough. My car was 2.1 Turbo Diesel (59kw) and when turbo starts going wrong I sold whole engine and start thinking about an engine swap.
I made decision that mercedes diesels are the best diesel engines ever made so I bought 1991 W124 300 turbo diesel mercedes as donor and took the engine with automatic transmission out.
I get the engine (OM 603.960, 147 hp) rebuilt as well and get it ready for swap.
But there are some complication and I would like to ask for your help...
All engines in jeep has oil pan in back of the engine (opposite than mercedes) because of front axle and steering bars...
Solution could be:
1) turning the oil pan around and change oil pump
2) massive lift 8" (definitely not the best way I guess)
3) moving the engine forward and replace steering bars (no enough room for that)
4) or moving the engine backward and do firewall/trans tunnel cutting
The reason I am writing this is because I have seen somewhere on your FORUM an oil pan which has the deepest part of the oil pan in the middle of the pan.
Is it regular oil pan or was somehow modified? Is the oil pump same as in W124 or different?
May I ask you for some pictures of your engines to see how it is?
Because it could be the way how to make it works, I do not want massive lift either cutting....
And the other thing - I need to make up some adapter for jeep transfer case, may I ask for some pictures your driveshaft between trasmission and transfer case, I probably will need to use this or make similar one.
Thanks very much for your help and keep well
Paul
I have never heard of the oil pan you describe. The closest I know is that the G engine oil pan is deeper than the standard car engine, with a suitable oil pump. However, the location of the pan is the same, still in the front. It sounds like you need to modify the existing oil pan with the deep part located where you want for your vehicle. The difficulty would be modifying the oil pump pick up to suit the custom location. The oil pump is located at the front of the engine
Hello Spelius,
I can only think of converting to a dry sump, this is a system of oil circulation and collection applied on some Rally cars. There is no deep oil sump as such, but merely, an oil cover. In other words the deep section of your oil sump can be cut away and welded short with Tig-welder, the welder needs to be good, it is not easy to weld aliuminium.
The oil returning into the cover is scavenged out by a scavenge pump to a suitable reservoir mounted inside the cab, it is from this reservoir the oil is fed back to the engine for lubriction. This system over comes any deep filled sumps, being protected from any sump damage.
You will have to research where to get these kits from, I do not know wheather they are a universial kit which can be adapted to fit any engine or for that matter, do not have any more info. on scavanging pumps etc...
Regards,
The Mercedes petrol 6.9 litre engine used in the early s class is a dry sump, I believe the reservoir is on the inner wing.
I try to insert a few pictures to describe it
