Drivers side window stopped working
I let it down about an inch before realising i hit the wrong button. on trying to put the window back up again, absolutely nothing happened and is still not happening. no noise, no movement, no nothing! its simply stuck and wont move. the passenger side works fine. i thought i might be the regulator but the glass doesn't have much more play in it than the passenger side.
could it be a fuse? are the two windows on separate fuses?
a switch?
a solenoid?
a regulator?
where do i begin troubleshooting?
it's about to start raining - please help!!
PS - don't know if it's related but at almost the same time as the window playing up, the SRS warning lamp came on for about 30 seconds. Key fob/central locking/alarm is also working intermittently...... :?
Try and help the glass back to the closed position by putting your hands flat on the glass both sides and lift at the same time as the switch in operated in the "close window" position....once shut leave it alone until you can sort it out in a dry environment.....need to take the door panel off to access the motor and mechanism.the channels could be dirty with moss and road dirt and this puts a load on the motor.which may have failed.get the window shut to keep the rain out ...for now....
your center consul looked a bit knackered sav. you remember that screw at the base of the GA gear lever :?: your connections may have been diconnected at one point and not been refitted properly... its worth taking the center consul out and checking that the connections are ok. its quite easy, even i did it
good luck.
If you turn the ignition on (do not start the engine) observe all the lights at the bottom of the instrument console and press the window switch ..if the motor is drawing power the the lights will dim slightly every time you press the switch....no dim... no power drain... means no electrical circuit to the window motor.. now do like Huss says GENTLY lift the centre console an inch at a time otherwise you may pull wires off and without the wiring diagram you could have difficulty finding the right connections again ......could be somebody spilt coffee or juice over the switch creating a bad contact..clean the switch with switch cleaner......
It is certainly easier to dismantle the centre consol and checking the switch connection before removing the door panel. The switch connector can fall off the back quite easily. But you have to be gentle lifting the centre consol as the wires have little slack in them.
If that checks out then you have to remove the door panel and check the circuit at the motor
What year is yours again? I had to remove and return the connections to the motors (among other things while changing the rubber accordion-like square tube between the door and A/B-pillar) and they were not easy to come off (2000 model car). Maybe someone took them out before and didn't push them all the way in...
I find you can generally tell if the door has been opened before once you open it yourself. I guess between 1994 and 2000 the window mechanism remained the same, and it was only changed in 2002 (lucky US market!)

I had never heard anyone cursing the window mechanisms until the Americans got the G.... but supposedly the newer ones are better.

thanks guys - it turned out to be a loose connection going in to the motor. the wire is back in now but the manner in which it goes in to the motor looks bit fragile to me. i think it will hold but you would think that on such a well engineered car with such a heavy door that the connection would be a little more secure.
