My Speedo just stopped working, I think the cable is intact, however I can't see anything turning on the right angle box that comes off the Transfer Box. Is there any little cog that fails in there?

Re: 463 Speedo Drive

nothing should be turning outside the box...i attach the image to get an idea of what it should look like. i'd pull the instrument cluster out and unscrew the cable, and see if that bit turns when moving...(or remove it from the transfer case end too and see how easy it is to turn, or if it turns at all)

Check the speedo drives shown by M2dxb's thread, these chew up. Check at the transfer box and the angular adapters by removing the speedo cable from the adapter.

Re: 463 Speedo Drive

I am a bit confused, I've checked at the Transfer box, with the Cable removed, and with the back axle jacked up , I can't see any drive/movement on the male part that drives the cable, nor with the right angle removed. Is it possible the centre diff is making sure I don't see any movement? Next is to remove the instrument panel to check that end, I hate removing that because of possible damage!

With one axle jacked up you wouldn't see anything, unless the car was moving with you looking at the same time (a bit risky!).
If you want to get drive at the speedo drive then you need to be moving, or at least have all 4 wheels up to move freely...

Thanks , I will try jacking all four wheels off the ground, and report back, I reckon it probably is at the Speedo Head the fault as the failure was virtually instant.

Re: 463 Speedo Drive

Here it gets interesting. I am going mostly on theory here as I haven't played with a G with all 4 wheels up before (esp. 463), but if you try turning one wheel on one axle, it will turn the opposite wheel on that axle in the opp. direction.
Try turning the front axle, and it will turn the rear axle in the opposite direction. You might need 4 handy helpers turning the wheels in the same direction, which I think will turn the transfer-case/transmission shaft (presuming transmission is in N). That's all in theory...I wish someone here with experience of doing it speaks up...I don't want to lead you on a wild goose chase!
Found the following which might be of assistance (though it is fir later models without the speedo drive, but it shows the general working)

Re: 463 Speedo Drive

I removed the right angle drive (external to the transferbox) then the removed the speedo drive (4bolts ) only to discover the teeth had worn right down on one section of the bevel gear. How do I remove and replace this gear? I presume this is the gear Rakesh was talking about.

Re: 463 Speedo Drive

If I remember right, it involves heating it to no more than 120C (with a hot air gun maybe?) then fitting it over the shaft, so that must work for removal too.

Re: 463 Speedo Drive

I managed to seperate it from the cover by using the nut ( which has left and right threads on it ) to free the bush from the cover after carefully clamping it in a Vice. slightly puzzled about why it failed, Speedo Cable very free, shaft is very stiff to turn , you have to use pliers. EPC shows a washer next to gear wheel couldn't see one on mine.
New shaft, waher and bush on order.hope it will go together, may use oven to heat casing!

150k sounds like a reasonable service interval! btw. you speedo doesn't "bounce" at very low speeds, does it?
