my windscreen wipers are all of a sudden not working. nor is their water jet. Nor are my beams when i PULL the lever to flash.
But the full beams work when i PUSH the lever to engage them.

could this be a problem with the actual lever behind the steering wheel and if so, any pointers on how to get to the bottom of and solve the problem? if not, how do i know if something is wrong with the wipers themselves other than the fact that they don't engage when they are supposed to?

diesel gauge is also acting funny - didn't recognise the fuel I put in yesterday until about 20 minutes later....something screwy going on?

please help.

Hi Mr Sav do you have the owners manual for the G'? if so you will find a fuse application chart(the fuses are under the steering wheel on LHD or glovebox on the RHD....the fuses are numbered from left to right and the chart will show you which fuse supplies what services.....if the fuses are good it may be a bad earth connection between the fuse carrier and therest of the car....all your problems appear to be with the flasher /mainbeam stalk except the fuel guage..the switch at the bottom of the stalk may have dirty contacts..clean with switch cleaner...the fuel guage float may be dragging due to contamination in the bottom of the fuel tank (fossil fuel fungus) a black sludge which can distort the guide wires on the fuel guage sender in the fuel tank......check what other electrical items are not working like panel lights when you turn the ignition key on..the washer pumps can clog up with screen washer sludge and jam the pump motor..all can be cleaned and serviced..check the rear wash wipe as well ......

my first stop was the fuse box - but the legend is all in German! Anyone have a English one?
I think your instinct about the stalk contacts could be the way forward. when i just touch it forward (literally 1 mm), the full beams engage, and it sticks. I have to pull it back to disengage. how do i get the stalk off??

Hi Try a switch cleaner before any dismantling..my dad used to say dismantling is quick and easy its the mantling that takes the time.......does the stalk switch selfcancel the indicators when you turn the steering wheel.?

i agree. switch cleaner has done 2 of these for me. tip - use lots, move the lever every which way whilst spraying into the gap in the column shroud where the stalk exits. let it dry before trying to switch anything on. it may take 2 or 3 goes but muuuuuuuuch more efficient than a replacement

Sorry to divert the topic, but key question you got there. Mine doesn't cancel on the first quarter-turn, though it does when the steering is turned more than once (i.e. on 2nd turn), is that also curable with switch cleaner??! I tried disassembling but went as far as steering wheel then shroud then stopped as I didn't know what I was doing (maybe moments before the discovery was made!)

How does this switch cleaner work? Is it for all electronic switches? My webasto timer switch is finicky as sometimes you need to keep it pressed for a long time other times it works instantly. Could this help?

yes, both sides exhibit the same problem, the wheel has to be turned 270deg or a full 360 for the switch to self-cancel. when i tried taking it apart i was basically looking to see if anything had been put in backwards perhaps..

Re: help - wiper problem? Or lever problem?

self canceling seems to work ok.
sprayed the switch cleaner in today a couple of times but no luck yet. fuses also look good (Maxwell - there is no English translation on the reverse of the legend).
Indicators work fine.
Full beam when stalk is pushed works fine.
Canceling works fine.
Other functions are faulty.
What next?

Re: help - wiper problem? Or lever problem?

regarding the self cancelling problem.... at the steering column end of the the stalk there is a finger which rides on a fixture attached to the steering column that has detents around the radius... as you select indicators the arm rests on the the fixture and as the steering column returns to centre the detent trips the finger and returns the stalk to the off position..It would seem that the stalk switch is sticking or dirty (old grease) and this is causing the problem of requiring a second nudge to cancel....back to using copious quantities of the switch cleaner I think....make sure you are flushing the switch mechanism and repeat until you can hear and feel positive clicking..same goes for Mr Sav
