Unless you want to buy a compression gauge tester with adapters to fit your engine, I suggest you get a local diesel expert to do the job for you.

This tool even if you buy it will be rarely used. Your choice.

Alternatively, if you do not take a direct compression test of the cylinders, you can ask the garage to do an anyalsis of cylinder balance, this can be done at cranking speed or under runing conditions; provided the garage is equiped with the appropriate diagnostic equipment.

Thanks Pistonhead,
I' ll follow your advice, doesn't worth to buy it, you have right. My concern is the emissions that comes out of the pipe on the head and goes to turbo, there are a lot

Re: OM602 Compresion

Hi fellows,
any idea of the spare parts that I need for a proper rebuild of my OM 602?
Just to estimate the amount of money that I have to pay for.
Thanks Angelos

Without having any idea, I would say that it very much depends on the state of your engine....

Hi Jesus,
my G has 500.000 km on the clock  , meaning propably I have to overhaul (is that the correct word? )change pistons etc. Is there any full kit for that? Also I have heard that there are MAHLE spare parts for this, any point on that?

Even with that mileage, the overhaul might not need to be complete. I ve seen Mercedes engines with twice that mileage and the pistons looked like new, needing only new segments. The only way to know the state of your engine is to take it to a specialist. In Spain many inmigrants worked in Mercedes factories in Germany in the seventies and eighties and then returned and set up their workshops specilalizing in Mercedes engines. I would imagine that Greece should be very much like that too. Make your enquires and find a trustworthy place to take your G to and ask them to do it for you....

Re: OM602 Compresion

Hi all,
finally the head gasket was cracked. As the head was out I ve found that there were no need for ovehaul and I changed all the part for valves (seals etc), rings of the pistons and tie rods. When the job was done the engine for almost 1500 km was working very smooth but there was and rythmic metalic sound, specially on acceleration, knocking like a stuck valve. I return to the mechanic, he opened the carter, checked all the moving parts from the bottom of the engine but in vain, the sound is still there.
I am sad for the moment as I spend a lot of money and time but I do not have my car fixed so far. I hope that tomorrow the mechanic might find the source of the wierd sound.

Re: OM602 Compresion

The last part of the story.
The engine is out and goes for overhaul due to the 1st cylinder which was over-worned (is the correct word???).
I am waiting for the final result.

Hi Unusual to have cylinder wear on just one cylinder after 500.000 km perhaps the engine was run with low water causing the front cylinder to overheat. are you going to change all the journal bearings oil pump and timing chain during the overhaul???

I will change every worn item to be sure for the next 500.000 km 8)
I will give details as soon the repair will finish.
