widest tyre size for a 5.5"x16" rim?

what's the maximum size mud tyre that should be fitted on a 5.5" width rim?

Germans fit the BFG M/T 235/85R16 on the 5.5x16" MB rims without issues but that is the max.....

There are experts out there who will be able to tell you but I believe that the 7.50x16 will probably fit as well.

Yeah, agree with Morty. I'd go the 235/85x16 route too. And that is the max.

The 7.50x16 is the same height as the 235/85x16 only a bit narrower and will also fit same rim.
Both above sizes available in mud tyres, which one to go for depends on the depth of your pocket and amount and type of use you'll put them to.

While I personally ran 235/85 x16s for many years, one of our AGOA Members, Kerry, currently runs 255 x 85 x16 bfg Mud Terrains on his standard 5.5" wheels without issue and in fact swears by them. I have attached a picture of Kerry's vehicle.

The wider footprint of the 255 tyre would normally make the heavy G wagen better off road, but on a 5.5" rim I think it is a mite too wide and while it will fit it , when inflated will tend to push out the centre of the top of the tyre leading to premature wear and eventually tyre distortion.

At the end of the day its what works for you really.

Someone else recently mentioned BFG don't recommend a tyre as wide as a 235 on a 5.5" rim, so where do you go then. 7.50x16 will not be a problem.
