I am contemplating re-powering my 460 LWB 280 with a diesel engine.
A 2.7 Sprinter engine seems to be a likely alternative power source but
I would also consider an OM606.
Does anyone have any comment and advice they might offer?
Particularly with regard to transmission/bell housing to engine mounts etcetera.

Re: Diesel re-power

Hi it would have to be a very early sprinter engine because of the sophisticated engine management setup.. interfacing the electrics into a 460 is daunting....

Look here;

The 2.7 would be a newer CDI Sprinter .. which seem to have a bad name for eating expensive injectors at circa 40k miles.

The older 2.9 version still has electronics (most are 2.2).. but looking at it they are not hideous.. well if you are very happy with ECU and electronics.. a really you would need the whole van to ensure you cut out the right section of the wiring harness. What put me off was cost of inlet manifold and sump... that is a lot of diesel or tuning for a 617a.. that is not to say I will not; yet to take a good look under a Musso and one day I hope to get around to buying a TIG welder which would solve the expensive parts .. with an expensive welder I would get to keep..

Did you know that there is an Australian G club also?
Sprinter engine 2.9l is probably alot easier than the CDI

Re: Diesel re-power

Is it in any way helpful to suggest that since the 461 used the 2.9 l sprinter engine ( well near enough anyway ) that MB information would be available to marry up the electrics?
I could not do it but an auto electrican ?

Re: Diesel re-power

Thank you all for the constructive comments ladies and gents.................
It seems to me that I might be better off looking at an older diesel as was fitted to the US 3 litre turbo (OM 603 ?) and teh G Wagen circa 1987......a more basic engine it would seem...............and it would be an easier fit..............
Yes, I am aware that there is a G wagen Association in Oz.......thanks

Roly,
Thanks for confirming that the 603 was fitted to the G Wagen.
I may be getting to old to be impressed with modern technology (i.e the sprinter engine etcetera).
Now where did I last put my spanners................

Hello
Am over here in NZ and no spring chicken. My LWB 460 has now clocked up 20000 K with the om602 turbo Sprinter engine and no problems at all. The A/C even works!!!!. Would rather it had a 5 speed auto but as yet I have not fitted one. The 722.5 sits in the garage . Swap will require a shorter shaft to the transfer case. Next G will def be a 320cdi. Was excited on April 1 but now heavily depressed!!! Would be curious to see what part number the headlights are for the Japanese market as they take LHD and drive normally like us! Good liuck with what ever you swap engines with. Give me a yell if you need tips
