Really stupid question.........

Today I started to dismantle the brakes on my 'project G'.
A. To learn how the system works (theory is fine but actually seeing it will help I think!)
B. The brakes are very bad, scarily so. The idea is to overhaul the whole system at my leisure.

Well: wheel off, drum off, this is too easy! Stared intelligently at the mechanism, looks fine to me. anyway other wheel off, drum off, errr NO!
I cannot for the life of me get the drum off, it will turn freely but even with the help of Mr HAMMER and a block of wood it wont budge.

OK, time to think; I know, release the brakeshoes with that little adjuster wheelie thing on the inside of the drum, (what an AKWARD position that is)

I have adjusted it upwards and downwards, hit it, swore at it and still no joy.

So the question is, it is the left drum and lying underneath the G looking at it, does it go up or down to release the shoes?
Please advise as I am not off to a very good start here and would love to learn how to do it.

Thanks a lot

Richard

Hi Grendle,

yes, i have taken the locking screw out,
didn't think about the handbrake cables though.
I will try that tomorrow, having said that, the drum rotates free-ish and will come off about a cm before refusing to budge.

Thanks for the tip

regards

Richard

It can either be grabbing on the shoes or the centre hub. Back the shoes as far back as you can which I suppose you have done. The centre hub can be cleaned with a wire brush and srew driver to clear the rust

I'll attach the relavent page from the manual showing the adjuster internal workings. You should be able to see which way to turn it from that, one is reverse thread.

Re: Really stupid question.........

When drums get worn .. they create a lip from the groove worn that prevents the shoes coming off. To start with take all adjustment out as stated on inside and cable.

Make sure drum is loose on axle .. and it is just being held as if on springs (big hammer to loosen first then..)

If unadjusting fails.. then take off the shoe retaining cups (twist by 90 degrees while pushing in) which are half way up the backing plate.. this will allow the shoes to lift off the backing plates and then twist from the slave/adjuster .. you could even undo the slave/adjuster mounting bolts too.. (mine were needed serious big hammer to come away so maybe not!) .. and in the 2 times I have been in this place with drum brakes this removal of retaining clips allowed the drums to tug off after a bit of a battle.. bouncing, twisting, turning.. one of those times was with the G.

Once drums are off .. then Carefully use an angle grinder to remove that lip while ensuring you do not grind any of the drum running surface. That should prevent this happening next time.. 8)

Cheers for that! Yes the unadjusting failed, still won't come off. Will have a go next weekend again.

thanks again
